Abstract

A modular trigger system releasably attaches to a cymbal or other percussive element. The trigger system has a metal cover plate releasably affixable to a surface of the cymbal or percussive element, at least one piezo sensor releasably affixable to a surface of the cover plate, and a dampening element sandwiched between the undersurface of the cymbal or percussive element and the metal cover plate. The dampening element comprises a flexible thin sheet of rubber with a plurality of openings aligned with the piezo sensors.

Claims (23)

1. A trigger system releasably attachable to a cymbal, the trigger system comprising:

a metal cover plate releasably affixable to an undersurface of the cymbal, the metal cover plate not mounted on a central spindle of the cymbal;

at least one piezo sensor affixed to the metal cover plate on a side of the cover plate facing the cymbal; and

a dampening element sandwiched between the undersurface of the cymbal and the metal cover plate, the dampening element comprising a flexible thin sheet of rubber with at least one opening extending through the dampening element, the at least one opening aligned with the piezo sensor and slightly larger than the piezo sensor, wherein the piezo sensor is within the opening.

2. The trigger system of claim 1 , wherein the dampening element comprises a footprint substantially similar to a footprint of the metal cover plate.

3. The trigger system of claim 1 , wherein at least one piezo sensor and at least a corresponding one of the plurality of openings on the dampening element are aligned with a cup portion of the cymbal.

4. The trigger system of claim 3 , wherein at least one piezo sensor and at least a corresponding one of the plurality of openings on the dampening element are aligned with a middle portion of the cymbal.

5. The trigger system of claim 4 , wherein at least one piezo sensor and at least a corresponding one of the plurality of openings on the dampening element are aligned with an edge portion of the cymbal.

6. The trigger system of claim 5 , wherein portions of the cover plate corresponding to the openings on the rubber dampening element are solid with no openings.

7. The trigger system of claim 2 , wherein the metal cover plate and the dampening element are circular in shape.

8. A trigger system releasably attachable to an acoustic percussion element, the trigger system comprising:

a metal cover plate releasably affixable to a surface of the acoustic percussion element;

one or more piezo sensors affixable to the cover plate on a side of the cover plate facing the acoustic percussion element;

a dampening element with a footprint substantially similar to a footprint of the metal cover plate, the dampening element sandwiched between the acoustic percussion element and the metal cover plate, the dampening element comprising a flexible thin sheet of rubber with an opening extending through the dampening element, the opening corresponding to and aligned with each of the piezo sensors, wherein each piezo sensor is within an opening.

9. The trigger system of claim 8 , wherein each opening is sized slightly larger than its corresponding piezo sensor.

10. The trigger system of claim 9 , wherein portions of the cover plate corresponding to the openings on the dampening element are solid with no openings.

11. A trigger system releasably attachable to an acoustic percussion element, the trigger system comprising:

a metal cover plate releasably affixable to a surface of the acoustic percussion element;

one or more piezo sensors affixed to the cover plate on a side of the cover plate facing the acoustic percussion element;

a dampening element compressed between the acoustic percussion element and the metal cover plate, the dampening element comprising a flexible thin sheet of rubber with an opening corresponding to and aligned with each of the piezo sensors, the opening extending through the dampening element, wherein the piezo sensor is within the opening.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the dampening element has a footprint substantially similar to a footprint of the metal cover plate.

13. The trigger system of claim 11 , wherein each opening is sized slightly larger than its corresponding piezo sensor.

14. The trigger system of claim 13 , wherein portions of the cover plate corresponding to the openings on the dampening element are solid with no openings.
