Abstract

Disclosed in certain embodiments are carbon dioxide sorbents that include porous particles impregnated with an amine compound.

Claims (26)

1. A method for producing a sorbent, the method comprising:

forming a silicon-based coating on porous support particles to form a coated support by treating the porous support particles with a silicate solution; and

impregnating the coated support with a gas-adsorbing material, the gas-adsorbing material comprising an amine compound.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein forming the silicate solution comprises one or more of tetraethylorthosilicate, or sodium silicate.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

calcining the coated support prior to forming the silicon-based coating or after forming the silicon-based coating.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the calcining comprises calcining at a temperature ranging from 400° C. and 600° C.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the amine compound comprises diethanolamine.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein a CO 2 adsorption capacity of the sorbent is greater than 8 g/L when the sorbent is maintained at a temperature greater than 20° C. and less than 40° C.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous support particles comprise a clay.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous support particles comprise one or more of bentonite, attapulgite, kaolinite, montmorillonite, ball clay, fuller's earth, hectorite, palygorskite, saponite, sepiolite, halloysite, silica, calcium sulfate, zeolite, synthetic zeolite, alumina, fumed silica, activated charcoal, or metal organic framework.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous support particles comprise attapulgite.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous support particles comprise silica having clay coated thereon.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein a surface area of the porous support particles is greater than 50 m 2 /g prior to impregnation with the gas-adsorbing material.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein an average pore volume of the sorbent is greater than 0.2 cc/g and less than 0.8 cc/g.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sorbent is in a form of granules.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein an average size of the granules ranges from about 0.25 mm to about 5 mm.

15. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

washcoating the sorbent onto a substrate selected from a porous ceramic honeycomb, a metallic honeycomb, or a polymeric foam.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous support particles are in a form of a powder.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

after impregnating the powder with the gas-adsorbing material, forming granules from the sorbent.

18. A method for producing a sorbent, the method comprising:

impregnating porous support particles with a gas-adsorbing material, the gas-adsorbing material comprising diethanolamine, wherein the porous support particles comprise a silicon-based coating having been formed by treatment of the porous support particles with a silicate solution.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising:

calcining the porous support particles prior to the impregnating.
