Abstract

A controller is capable of controlling an asset or target in physical and/or virtual three-dimensional space using a single hand by generating control inputs in four or more degrees of freedom while also limiting cross-coupling (unintended motions). The controller includes a first control member is configured to be gripped in a user's single, second control member is disposed on or near a top end of the first member movable with at least one degree of freedom independently of the movement of the first control member, and a third control member positioned on the first member for displacement by one or more digits of the user's single hand and coupled with the second member to move in opposition to movement of the second control member.

Claims (24)

1. A controller for generating control inputs for at least four degrees of freedom, comprising:

a first control member shaped for gripping by a user's hand, the first control member being adapted for displacement by the user in at least two degrees of freedom relative to a predetermined frame of reference;

a first sensor for measuring displacement of the first control member in each of the first control member's at least two degrees of freedom;

a second control member mounted on the first control member for displacement relative to the first control member in two or more degrees of freedom, the second control member being located on the first control member in a position that allows for its displacement in at least one of the second control member's two or more degrees of freedom by a thumb or index finger on the user's hand while gripping the first control member; and

a second sensor for measuring displacement of the second control member in each of its two or more degrees of freedom of relative to first control member.

2. The controller of claim 1 , further comprising a base coupled to the first control member.

3. The controller of claim 2 , further comprising a forearm brace coupled to the base and configured to be length adjustable relative to the first control member.

4. The controller of claim 1 , wherein the at least two degrees of freedom of the first control member are rotational.

5. The controller of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the two degrees of freedom of the first control member corresponds to yaw input, and at least another one of the two degrees of freedom of the first control member corresponds to a roll input.

6. The controller of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the two degrees of freedom of the first control member corresponds to pitch input.

7. The controller of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the two degrees of freedom of the second control member corresponds to a translational input.

8. The controller of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the two degrees of freedom of the second control member corresponds to a z-axis input.

9. The controller of claim 1 , wherein the first control member is shaped to be grasped by a hand of a user.

10. The controller of claim 1 , further comprising a centering mechanism for each degree of freedom to generate a force to inform a user of a null position by tactile feedback.

11. The controller of claim 10 , wherein the tactile feedback includes one of reactive motion, a force, or vibration.

12. The controller of claim 1 , further comprising a processor configured to receive from the sensor indication of the measured amount of the movement of the first or second control member and generate a corresponding control input for the target.

13. The controller of claim 1 , further comprising a gimbal mounted within the base for connection to the first control member.

14. The controller of claim 13 , wherein the gimbal is movable in three degrees of freedom.

15. The controller of claim 13 , wherein the gimbal includes a socket and a ball movably coupled within the socket, the gimbal including centering mechanisms to generate forces to inform a user of a null position by tactile feedback, the centering mechanisms being springs, the springs being engaged with detents of the socket to provide a force towards the ball and urge the first control member into the null position.

16. The controller of claim 15 , wherein the detents include three pairs of detents, at least two pairs of which are orthogonally oriented relative to one another.

17. The controller of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second sensors for measuring displacement are each comprised of one or more detectors, each detected selected from a group consisting essentially of inertial measurement units, accelerometers, optical encoders, gyroscopes, photo detectors, rotary potentiometers, linear potentiometers, inductively coupled coils, physical actuators, gyroscopes, switches, load cells, electro-mechanical sensors, and transducers.

18. The controller of claim 1 , wherein the second control member is configured to move up and down.

19. The controller of claim 1 , for generating control inputs to control a target object being an aircraft, a submersible vehicle, a spacecraft, or a control target in a virtual environment.

20. The controller of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second sensors for measuring displacement each comprise one or more detectors for measuring angular or linear displacement.
