Abstract

An apparatus includes an amplifier circuit and a protection circuit. The amplifier circuit may be configured to generate an output signal by amplifying an input signal received at an input port. The input signal may be a radio-frequency signal. The protection circuit may be configured to (i) generate a detection signal by detecting when a level of the input signal exceeds a corresponding threshold, where the level is a power level, a voltage level or both, (ii) route the input signal away from the input port of the amplifier circuit and disable the amplifier circuit both in response to the detection signal being continuously active at least a first time duration and (iii) route the input signal to the input port of the amplifier circuit and enable the amplifier circuit both in response to the detection signal being continuously inactive at least a second time duration.

Claims (10)

1. An apparatus comprising:

an amplifier circuit configured to generate an output signal by amplifying an input signal received at an input port, wherein (i) said amplifier circuit consumes a bias current and (ii) said input signal is a radio-frequency signal; and

a first protection circuit configured to (i) generate a first detection signal by detecting when a level of said input signal exceeds a corresponding first threshold, wherein said level is (a) a power level, (b) a voltage level or (c) both said power level and said voltage level, (ii) limit said bias current to said amplifier circuit in response to said first detection signal being continuously active for at least a first time duration and (iii) undo said limit of said bias current to said amplifier circuit in response to said detection signal being continuously inactive for at least a second time duration.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a second protection circuit configured to (i) generate a second detection signal by detecting when said level of said input signal exceeds a corresponding second threshold, (ii) route said input signal away from said input port of said amplifier circuit and disable said amplifier circuit both in response to said second detection signal being continuously active for at least a third time duration and (iii) route said input signal to said input port of said amplifier circuit and enable said amplifier circuit both in response to said detection signal being continuously inactive for at least a fourth time duration.

3. The apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein said first threshold is lower than said second threshold.

4. The apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein said first time duration determined by said first protection circuit is shorter than said third time duration determined by said second protection circuit.

5. The apparatus according to claim 2 , further comprising a receive switch connected (i) to said input port of said amplifier circuit and (ii) between said first protection circuit and said second protection circuit.

6. The apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein said second protection circuit is connected between a source of said input signal and said receive switch to continuously monitor said input signal.

7. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said radio-frequency signal has a frequency in a range of 2 gigahertz to 44 gigahertz.

8. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said amplifier circuit and said first protection circuit are configured to form part of a fifth-generation wireless communications system.
