Abstract

A described example includes a ribbon cartridge having a first spool housing to receive a first spool. The ribbon cartridge further having a second spool housing to receive a second spool. The ribbon cartridge further having at least one frame member extending between the first spool housing and the second spool housing and a spool lock, wherein the spool lock is configured to engage at least one of the first spool or the second spool in response to the ribbon cartridge not being received within a ribbon positioning assembly.

Claims (29)

1. A ribbon cartridge comprising:

a first spool housing configured to receive a first spool;

a second spool housing configured to receive a second spool; and

a frame including at least one frame member extending between the first spool housing and the second spool housing;

a spool lock, wherein the spool lock is configured to engage and prevent rotation of at least one of the first spool or the second spool in response to the ribbon cartridge not being received within a ribbon positioning assembly, the spool lock being integrally formed with the frame and projecting from the frame to engage the at least one of the first spool or the second spool to engage the at least one of the first spool or the second spool.

2. The ribbon cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the spool lock is configured to disengage the at least one of the first spool or the second spool in response to the ribbon cartridge being received within a ribbon positioning assembly.

3. The ribbon cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the spool lock is configured to engage both the first spool and the second spool in response to the ribbon cartridge not being received within a ribbon positioning assembly, and wherein the spool lock is configured to maintain a tension of a ribbon extending between the first spool and the second spool when the spool lock is engaged with the first spool and the second spool.

4. The ribbon cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the first spool is a ribbon supply spool, and wherein the second spool is a ribbon take-up spool, and wherein a radio frequency identification chip is disposed proximate the take-up spool.

5. A ribbon cartridge comprising:

a first spool housing configured to receive a first spool;

a second spool housing configured to receive a second spool; and

at least one frame member extending between the first spool housing and the second spool housing;

a spool lock, wherein the spool lock is configured to engage at least one of the first spool or the second spool in response to the ribbon cartridge not being received within a ribbon positioning assembly, wherein the frame member extending between the first spool housing and the second spool housing defines a recess,

wherein the recess of the frame member is defined by an area of the frame member that is narrower than a majority of the frame member.

6. The ribbon cartridge of claim 5 , wherein the frame member comprises additional structural reinforcement proximate the recess relative to the majority of the frame member.

7. The ribbon cartridge of claim 1 , further comprising a locking feature defining a locked position of the ribbon cartridge and an unlocked position of the ribbon cartridge, wherein locking feature is adapted to lock the ribbon cartridge in a ribbon positioning assembly.

8. The ribbon cartridge of claim 5 , wherein the spool lock is configured to disengage the at least one of the first spool or the second spool in response to the ribbon cartridge being received within a ribbon positioning assembly.

9. The ribbon cartridge of claim 5 , wherein the spool lock is configured to engage both the first spool and the second spool in response to the ribbon cartridge not being received within a ribbon positioning assembly, and wherein the spool lock is configured to maintain a tension of a ribbon extending between the first spool and the second spool when the spool lock is engaged with the first spool and the second spool.

10. The ribbon cartridge of claim 5 , wherein the first spool is a ribbon supply spool, and wherein the second spool is a ribbon take-up spool, and wherein a radio frequency identification chip is disposed proximate the take-up spool.

11. The ribbon cartridge of claim 5 , further comprising a locking feature defining a locked position of the ribbon cartridge and an unlocked position of the ribbon cartridge, wherein locking feature is adapted to lock the ribbon cartridge in a ribbon positioning assembly.

12. A ribbon cartridge comprising:

a first spool housing configured to receive a first spool;

a second spool housing configured to receive a second spool; and

at least one frame member extending between the first spool housing and the second spool housing,

wherein the recess of the frame member is defined by an area of the frame member that is narrower than a majority of the frame member.

13. The ribbon cartridge of claim 12 , wherein a spool lock is configured to engage or disengage the at least one of the first spool or the second spool based on whether the ribbon cartridge is received within a ribbon positioning assembly.

14. The ribbon cartridge of claim 12 , wherein the spool lock is integrally formed with a frame that includes the at least one frame member and projects from the frame in a direction that is perpendicular to an axis of rotation of at least the first spool or the second spool.

15. The ribbon cartridge of claim 12 , wherein the first spool is a ribbon supply spool, and wherein the second spool is a ribbon take-up spool, and wherein a radio frequency identification chip is disposed proximate the take-up spool.

16. The ribbon cartridge of claim 12 , further comprising a locking feature defining a locked position of the ribbon cartridge and an unlocked position of the ribbon cartridge, wherein locking feature is adapted to lock the ribbon cartridge in a ribbon positioning assembly.
