Abstract

A device includes a plurality of antennas, including one or more active antennas, the antennas being configured in one of a plurality of possible configurations to achieve operation in WAN, LTE, WiFi, or WiMax bands, or a combination thereof. In some embodiments, a passive antenna is utilized with lumped loading to fix the antenna tuning state. A primary and auxiliary radiator can be included in the device and configured for WAN/LTE bands, while additional antennas can be incorporated for WiFi and WiMax bands. Various antenna configurations incorporate the antenna having multiple coupled regions.

Claims (39)

1. An antenna system comprising:

a first antenna coupled to a first signal feed and configured to communicate over a first frequency band, the first antenna comprising an active antenna; and

a second antenna coupled to a second signal feed and configured to communicate over a second frequency band, the second frequency band being different than the first frequency band, the second signal feed being different than the first signal feed, the second antenna comprising an active antenna,

wherein the first antenna comprises:

a driven element comprising a conductor having a horizontal portion and a vertical portion;

a first parasitic element comprising a horizontal portion and a vertical portion, the first parasitic element positioned relative to the driven element such that a first capacitive coupling region is defined between the horizontal portion of the first parasitic element and the horizontal portion of the driven element; and

a second parasitic element comprising a horizontal portion and a vertical portion, the second parasitic element positioned relative to the first parasitic element such that a second capacitive coupling region is defined between the horizontal portion of the first parasitic element and the horizontal portion of the second parasitic element.

2. The antenna system of claim 1 , wherein the second antenna further comprises a passive antenna.

3. The antenna system of claim 1 , wherein the first antenna further comprises:

a first active component electrically coupled between the first parasitic element and an electrical ground; and

a second active component electrically coupled between the second parasitic element and the electrical ground.

4. The antenna system of claim 3 , wherein the first active component and the second active component each comprise a switching device.

5. The antenna system of claim 4 , wherein the switching device comprises a single-pole multiple-throw switching device.

6. The antenna system of claim 1 , wherein:

the first frequency band is associated with a cellular network; and

the second frequency band is associated with a non-cellular network.

7. The antenna system of claim 1 , wherein:

the vertical portion of the driven element extends a first distance from the horizontal portion of the driven element; and

the vertical portion of the first parasitic element extends a second distance from the horizontal portion of the first parasitic element, the second distance being shorter than the first di stance.

8. The antenna system of claim 7 , wherein the vertical portion of the second parasitic element extends a third distance from the horizontal portion of the second parasitic element, the third distance being shorter than the second distance.

9. A portable wireless communication device comprising:

a display screen; and

an antenna system comprising a first antenna comprising an active antenna and a second antenna comprising an active antenna, the first antenna coupled to a first signal feed and configured to communicate over a first frequency band, the second antenna coupled to a second signal feed and configured to communication over a second frequency band, the second signal feed being different than the first signal feed, the second frequency band being different than the first frequency band,

wherein the first antenna comprises:

a driven element comprising a conductor having a horizontal portion and a vertical portion;

a first parasitic element comprising a horizontal portion and a vertical portion, the first parasitic element positioned relative to the driven element such that a first capacitive coupling region is defined between the horizontal portion of the first parasitic element and the horizontal portion of the driven element; and

a second parasitic element comprising a horizontal portion and a vertical portion, the second parasitic element positioned relative to the first parasitic element such that a second capacitive coupling region is defined between the horizontal portion of the first parasitic element and the horizontal portion of the second parasitic element.

10. The portable wireless communication device of claim 9 , further comprising:

a base comprising a keyboard; and

a lid hingeably coupled to the base, the lid comprising the display screen.

11. The portable wireless communication device of claim 10 , wherein the antenna system is disposed within the lid.

12. The portable wireless communication device of claim 9 , wherein the first antenna further comprises:

a first active component electrically coupled between the first parasitic element and an electrical ground; and

a second active component electrically coupled between the second parasitic element and the electrical ground.

13. The portable wireless communication device of claim 12 , wherein the first active component and the second active component each comprise a switching device.

14. The portable wireless communication device of claim 13 , wherein the switching device comprises a single-pole multiple-throw switching device.

15. The portable wireless communication device of claim 9 , wherein:

the first frequency band is associated with a cellular network; and

the second frequency band is associated with a non-cellular network.
