Abstract

Systems and methods for identifying, assembling, and publishing content are described. A content item, such as a video, having a first time length, is identified by a system to be included in a program scheduled for a first time period. The video may be hosted on a third party system. A first span of time within the first program is allocated for the video, wherein the first span of time is longer than the first time length. The system determines, prior to or at the first time period, a time difference between a current length of the video and the first span of time. At least partly in response to determining that the video has a time length shorter than the first span of time, the system selects supplemental content based at least in part of the determined time difference to be streamed to user terminals over a data network within the first time period.

Claims (70)

1. A computer-implemented method, the method comprising:

maintaining, using a computer system, a data store of video content randomizer rules;

maintaining a data store of user information in non-transitory computer readable memory, the user information comprising:

explicitly provided user preferences, and

user viewing history with respect to streaming video content;

inferring user preferences using at least a portion of the user viewing history with respect to streaming video content;

causing a user interface comprising a randomizer control to be presented on a user terminal remote from the computer system which when activated is configured to automatically cause an item of non-scheduled video content to be selected;

detecting, over a network, a user activation of the randomizer control presented on the user terminal;

in response to detecting the user activation of the randomizer control presented on the user terminal:

automatically selecting an item of non-scheduled video content based at least in part on:

the randomizer rules;

the explicitly provided user preferences, and

the inferred user preferences;

causing the selected item of non-scheduled video content to be streamed over the network to the user terminal, wherein the automatically selected item of non-scheduled video content is not selected by the user.

The computer-implemented method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the user interface comprising the randomizer control is further configured with a program guide comprising an identification of a plurality of themed channels comprising video programs with identified start times and end times, wherein the user inferred preferences are determined based at least in part on user navigation behavior, and wherein the randomizer rules includes at least a first rule indicating that only content having a time length within a first range is to be selected and a second rule indicating that that only content meeting at least a first popularity criterion is to be selected.

3. The computer-implemented method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the user interface comprising the randomizer control is further configured with a program guide comprising an identification of a plurality of themed channels comprising video programs with identified start times and end times.

4. The computer-implemented method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the user interface comprising the randomizer control is further configured with a program guide comprising an identification of a plurality of items of video content.

The computer-implemented method as defined in claim 1 , the method further comprising causing the selected item of video content to be displayed for a first period of time, the first period of time less than the selected item of video content length, enable the user to continue playing the selected item of past the first period time by activating a corresponding control, and when the user does not activate the corresponding control, automatically causing a second item of content to be displayed.

6. The computer-implemented method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the user inferred preferences are determined based at least in part on user navigation behavior.

7. The computer-implemented method as defined in claim 1 , the method further comprising generating and presenting a program recommendation based at least in part on user navigation behavior.

8. The computer-implemented method as defined in claim 1 , the method further comprising generating and presenting a program recommendation based at least in part on user bookmarks.

9. The computer-implemented method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the randomizer rules includes at least a first rule indicating that only content having a time length within a first range is to be selected.

10. The computer-implemented method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the randomizer rules includes at least a first rule specifying that only content meeting at least a first popularity criterion are to be selected.

11. A system, comprising:

at least one processing device;

a network interface configured to communicate over a network with a video data store;

non-transitory memory storing programmatic code that when executed by the at least one processing device, cause the system to perform operations comprising:

maintain a data store of user information in non-transitory computer readable memory, the user information comprising:

explicitly provided user preferences, and/or

user viewing history with respect to streaming video content;

infer user preferences using at least a portion of the user viewing history with respect to streaming video content;

enable a user interface comprising a randomizer control, which when activated is configured to cause an item of non-scheduled video content to be automatically selected, to be presented on a user terminal remote from the system;

detect, using the network interface, a user activation of the randomizer control presented on the user terminal;

access randomizer rules;

automatically select an item of non-scheduled video content based at least in part on:

the randomizer rules; and

the inferred user preferences;

at least partly in response to detecting the user activation of the randomizer control presented on the user terminal:

cause the automatically selected item of non-scheduled video content to be streamed over the network to the user terminal, wherein the automatically selected item of non-scheduled video content is not selected by the user.

The system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the user interface comprising the randomizer control is further configured with a program guide comprising an identification of a plurality of themed channels comprising video programs, wherein the user inferred preferences are determined based at least in part on user navigation behavior, and wherein the randomizer rules includes at least a first rule indicating that only content having a time length within a first range is to be selected and a second rule indicating that that only content meeting at least a first popularity criterion is to be selected.

13. The system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the user interface comprising the randomizer control is further configured with a program guide comprising an identification of a plurality of themed channels comprising video programs.

14. The system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the user interface comprising the randomizer control is further configured with a program guide comprising an identification of a plurality of items of video content.

The system as defined in claim 11 , the operations further comprising causing the selected item of video content to be displayed for a first period of time, the first period of time less than the selected item of video content length, enable the user to continue playing the selected item of past the first period time by activating a corresponding control, and when the user does not activate the corresponding control, automatically causing a second item of content to be displayed.

16. The system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the user inferred preferences are determined based at least in part on user navigation behavior.

17. The system as defined in claim 11 , the operations further comprising generating and presenting a program recommendation based at least in part on user navigation behavior.

18. The system as defined in claim 11 , the operations further comprising generating and presenting a program recommendation based at least in part on user bookmarks.

19. The system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the randomizer rules includes at least a first rule indicating that only content having a time length within a first range is to be selected.

20. The system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the randomizer rules includes at least a first rule specifying that only content meeting a first popularity criterion are to be selected.

21. Non-transitory memory storing programmatic code that when executed by at least one processing device, cause the system to perform operations comprising:

access user information stored in non-transitory computer readable memory, the user information comprising:

explicitly provided user preferences, and/or

user viewing history with respect to streaming video content;

infer user preferences using at least a portion of the user viewing history with respect to streaming video content;

enable a user interface comprising a randomizer control, which when activated is configured to cause an item of non-scheduled video content to be automatically selected, to be provided to the user via a user terminal;

detect a user activation of the randomizer control provided via the user terminal;

access randomizer rules;

automatically select an item of non-scheduled video content based at least in part on:

the randomizer rules; and

the inferred user preferences;

at least partly in response to detecting the user activation of the randomizer control provided to the user via the user terminal:

cause the selected item of non-scheduled video content to be streamed over a network to the user terminal.

The non-transitory memory as defined in claim 21 , wherein the user interface comprising the randomizer control is further configured with a program guide comprising an identification of a plurality of themed channels comprising video programs, wherein the user inferred preferences are determined based at least in part on user navigation behavior, and wherein the randomizer rules includes at least a first rule indicating that only content having a time length within a first range is to be selected and a second rule indicating that that only content meeting at least a first popularity criterion is to be selected.

23. The non-transitory memory as defined in claim 21 , wherein the user interface comprising the randomizer control is further configured with a program guide comprising an identification of a plurality of themed channels comprising video programs.

24. The non-transitory memory as defined in claim 21 , wherein the user interface comprising the randomizer control is further configured with a program guide comprising an identification of a plurality of items of video content.

The non-transitory memory as defined in claim 21 , the operations further comprising causing the selected item of video content to be displayed for a first period of time, the first period of time less than the selected item of video content length, enable the user to continue playing the selected item of past the first period time by activating a corresponding control, and when the user does not activate the corresponding control, automatically causing a second item of content to be displayed.

26. The non-transitory memory as defined in claim 21 , wherein the user inferred preferences are determined based at least in part on user navigation behavior.

27. The non-transitory memory as defined in claim 21 , the operations further comprising generating and presenting a program recommendation based at least in part on user navigation behavior.

28. The non-transitory memory as defined in claim 21 , the operations further comprising generating and presenting a program recommendation based at least in part on user bookmarks.

29. The non-transitory memory as defined in claim 21 , wherein the randomizer rules includes at least a first rule indicating that only content having a time length within a first range is to be selected.

30. The non-transitory memory as defined in claim 21 , wherein the randomizer rules includes at least a first rule specifying that only content meeting a first popularity criterion are to be selected.
