Abstract

A control system in a delivery system performs a method to deliver a payload by an unmanned aerial vehicle, UAV, without requiring presence of the recipient even if the payload comprises sensitive or vulnerable goods. The method comprises obtaining a designated location for delivery of the payload, obtaining at least one payload vulnerability index for the payload, and obtaining a pick-up time indicative of a time point when the payload is expected to be retrieved by the recipient. The method further comprises selecting a final delivery area at or near the designated location as a function of the at least one payload vulnerability index and the pick-up time, and operating the UAV to deliver the payload to the final delivery area.

Claims (44)

1. A method of delivering a payload by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) said method comprising:

obtaining a designated location for delivery of the payload;

obtaining at least one payload vulnerability index for the payload;

obtaining a pick-up time indicative of a time point when the payload is expected to be retrieved by a recipient;

selecting a final delivery area at the designated location as a function of the at least one payload vulnerability index and the pick-up time;

operating an imaging device on the UAV to capture at least one image of the final delivery area in accordance with at least one image criterion;

receiving, after selecting the final delivery area, an indication from the recipient of a rejection of the final delivery area,

providing, to the recipient, external control, to the recipient, of a flight controller of the UAV for real time control for operating the UAV by the recipient while providing based on the at least one image for that is displayed display in real time, wherein the external control is provided to the recipient in response to the indication of the rejection of the final delivery area by the recipient; and

operating the UAV by the recipient using the external control of the flight controller to deliver the payload to the final delivery area,

wherein the selecting the final delivery area comprises:

predicting an environmental condition in a set of candidate delivery areas which are located within proximity of the designated location, wherein the environmental condition comprises predicted sunlight exposure in the candidate delivery areas based on shadows cast by structures in ones of the candidate delivery areas; and

selecting the final delivery area among the set of candidate delivery areas based on the environmental condition that was predicted and the at least one payload vulnerability index that comprises temperature sensitivity based on the predicted sunlight exposure.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one payload vulnerability index represents one or more of a monetary value, a temperature sensitivity, an acceptable range of storage temperatures, a moisture sensitivity, or a wind sensitivity.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein

the environmental condition is predicted for a residence time period that extends from an estimated delivery time to the pick-up time.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the environmental condition comprises at least one of an exposure to sunlight, an exposure to moisture, and an exposure to wind.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the environmental condition is predicted based on a three-dimensional model of a region surrounding the designated location and weather data for the region in the residence time period.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein the environmental condition is predicted based on sensor data from a sensor device on the UAV, or on another UAV.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the sensor data comprises at least one two-dimensional representation taken in proximity of the designated location.

8. The method of claim 3 , wherein the final delivery area is further selected based on input data which is supplied by the recipient and indicative of at least one candidate area in the set of candidate delivery areas.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the input data comprises one or more of a photographic reproduction and a textual description.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one image criterion is indicative of one or more objectively identifiable characteristics to be included in the at least one image.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing the at least one image for display to the recipient in real time or substantially in real time.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

operating the UAV to capture images of the final delivery area, while moving at least one of the UAV and the imaging device, until the at least one image is deemed to match a predefined image.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one image is captured after delivery of the payload to the final delivery area to include the payload.

14. A control system comprising logic configured to perform the method of claim 1 .

15. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), configured to perform operations comprising:

obtain a designated location for delivery of a payload;

obtain at least one payload vulnerability index for the payload;

obtain a pick-up time indicative of a time point when the payload is expected to be retrieved by a recipient;

select a final delivery area at the designated location as a function of the at least one payload vulnerability index and the pick-up time;

operate an imaging device on the UAV to capture at least one image of the final delivery area in accordance with at least one image criterion;

receive, after selecting the final delivery area, an indication from the recipient of a rejection of the final delivery area;

provide to the recipient, external control of a flight controller of the UAV for real time control for operating the UAV by the recipient based on the at least one image for display in real time, wherein the external control is provided to the recipient in response to the indication of the rejection of the final delivery area by the recipient; and

deliver the payload to the final delivery area by operating the UAV using the external control of the flight controller,

wherein the final delivery area is selected based on operations comprising:

predicting an environmental condition in a set of candidate delivery areas which are located within proximity of the designated location, wherein the environmental condition comprises predicted sunlight exposure in the candidate delivery areas based on shadows cast by structures in ones of the candidate delivery areas, and

selecting the final delivery area among the set of candidate delivery areas based on the environmental condition that was predicted and the at least one payload vulnerability index that comprises temperature sensitivity based on the predicted sunlight exposure.

16. The unmanned aerial vehicle of claim 15 ,

wherein the environmental condition is predicted for a residence time period that extends from an estimated delivery time to the pick-up time.

17. The unmanned aerial vehicle of claim 16 , which is further configured to predict the environmental condition based on sensor data from a sensor device on the unmanned aerial vehicle, or on another unmanned aerial vehicle.

18. The unmanned aerial vehicle of claim 15 , which is further configured to operate an imaging device on the unmanned aerial vehicle to capture at least one image of the final delivery area in accordance with at least one image criterion.
