Abstract

A method of forming an electrochromic (EC) device includes forming a solid-state first electrolyte layer, after forming the solid-state first electrolyte layer, laminating the first solid-state first electrolyte layer between a transparent first substrate and a transparent second substrate such that a transparent first electrode is disposed between the first substrate and a first side of the solid-state first electrolyte layer, and a transparent second electrode is disposed between the second substrate and a second side of the solid-state first electrolyte layer, and applying a sealant to seal the solid-state first electrolyte layer between the first and second substrates and to form the EC device.

Claims (46)

1. A method of providing an electrochromic (EC) device, the method comprising:

providing a solid-state first electrolyte layer;

applying a sealant to seal the solid-state first electrolyte layer between the first and second substrates and to form the EC device;

wherein the step of providing the solid-state first electrolyte layer comprises:

coating a third substrate with an electrolyte precursor composition;

curing the coated third substrate to form the solid-state first electrolyte layer; and

removing the solid-state first electrolyte layer from the third substrate.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

forming the first electrode on the first side of the solid-state first electrolyte layer; and

forming the second electrode on the second side of the solid-state first electrolyte layer.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

laminating the solid-state first electrolyte layer comprises stacking the solid-state first electrolyte layer between the first and second substrates, such that the first and second electrodes contact the respective first and second sides of the solid-state first electrolyte layer; and

curing the coated third substrate comprises heating the first substrate until substantially all of a solvent of the electrolyte precursor composition is driven from the solid-state first electrolyte layer.

4. A method of providing an electrochromic (EC) device, the method comprising:

providing a solid-state first electrolyte layer;

after providing the solid-state first electrolyte layer, laminating the solid-state first electrolyte layer between a transparent first substrate and a transparent second substrate such that a transparent first electrode is disposed between the first substrate and a first side of the solid-state first electrolyte layer, and a transparent second electrode is disposed between the second substrate and a second side of the solid-state first electrolyte layer; and

applying a sealant to seal the solid-state first electrolyte layer between the first and second substrates and to form the EC device;

wherein the step of providing the solid-state first electrolyte layer comprises:

melting a solid electrolyte material;

extruding the melted electrolyte material; and

cooling the extruded electrolyte material to form the solid-state first electrolyte layer.

5. A method of providing an electrochromic (EC) device, the method comprising:

providing a solid-state first electrolyte layer;
