Abstract

The present disclosure is directed to a lock assembly comprising an inner housing positionable on one side of a movable structure such as a door and an outer housing positionable on an opposing side of the structure. A pocket connection region having an aperture formed through a wall of the inner housing is configured to receive a head of a fastener therethrough. After the fastener extends through the aperture, a clamp device may be moved from an open position to a closed position so as to releasably lock the fastener to the pocket connection region of the inner housing. In another form, a retainer is configured to hold the fastener with respect to the inner housing during installation of the lock assembly. In this manner an inner housing may be quickly connected to an outer housing when installing a lock assembly to the structure.

Claims (71)

1. A lock assembly, comprising:

an inner housing positionable on one side of a structure and having an aperture formed through a wall of the inner housing;

an outer housing positionable on an opposite side of the structure;

a retainer positioned adjacent the aperture of the inner housing; and

a fastener configured to slide through the aperture in the inner housing; and

wherein the retainer is transitionable from a first configuration which permits the fastener to slide through the aperture in the inner housing to a second configuration which engages a shank portion of the fastener to maintain the fastener in the aperture.

2. A lock assembly, comprising:

an inner housing positionable on one side of a structure and having an aperture formed through a wall of the inner housing;

an outer housing positionable on an opposite side of the structure;

a retainer positioned adjacent the aperture of the inner housing; and

a fastener configured to slide through the aperture in the inner housing; and

wherein the retainer is transitionable from a first configuration which permits the fastener to slide through the aperture in the inner housing to a second configuration which maintains the fastener in the aperture, and wherein the inner housing comprises a retainer pocket formed about the aperture and configured to receive the retainer.

3. The lock assembly of claim 1 , wherein the retainer comprises a ring.

4. The lock assembly of claim 1 , further comprising an inner plate positioned between the inner housing and the outer housing and having a through aperture that receives the fastener.

5. The lock assembly of claim 4 , wherein the retainer is positioned between the inner housing and the inner plate.

6. A lock assembly, comprising:

an inner housing positionable on one side of a structure and having an aperture formed through a wall of the inner housing;

an outer housing positionable on an opposite side of the structure;

a retainer positioned adjacent the aperture of the inner housing; and

a fastener configured to slide through the aperture in the inner housing; and

wherein the retainer is transitionable from a first configuration which permits the fastener to slide through the aperture in the inner housing to a second configuration which maintains the fastener in the aperture, and wherein the retainer has an inner surface that engages the fastener when the retainer is in the second configuration to maintain the fastener in the aperture.

7. The lock assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first configuration of the retainer comprises an open configuration and the second configuration of the retainer comprises a closed configuration.

8. The lock assembly of claim 1 , further comprising an escutcheon rose configured to be positioned over an outer perimeter wall of the inner housing.

9. The lock assembly of claim 1 , wherein the fastener includes a head that is prevented from passing through the aperture in the inner housing.

10. A lock assembly, comprising:

an inner housing positionable on one side of a structure, the inner housing having an aperture extending through a wall of the inner housing;

an outer housing positionable on an opposite side of the structure;

a retainer aligned with the aperture in the inner housing; and

a threaded fastener configured to slide through the aperture in the inner housing and threadingly engage the outer housing; and

wherein the retainer permits the threaded fastener to slide through the aperture in the inner housing and engages a shank portion of the threaded fastener to maintain the threaded fastener in the aperture.

11. The lock assembly of claim 10 , further comprising a retainer pocket formed in the wall of the inner housing about the aperture and configured to receive the retainer.

12. A lock assembly, comprising:

an inner housing positionable on one side of a structure, the inner housing having an aperture extending through a wall of the inner housing;

an outer housing positionable on an opposite side of the structure;

a retainer aligned with the aperture in the inner housing; and

a threaded fastener configured to slide through the aperture in the inner housing and threadingly engage the outer housing; and

wherein the retainer permits the threaded fastener to slide through the aperture in the inner housing and engages the threaded fastener to maintain the threaded fastener in the aperture, and wherein the retainer comprises a ring.

13. The lock assembly of claim 10 , further comprising an inner plate positioned between the inner housing and the outer housing and having a through aperture that receives the threaded fastener, and wherein the retainer is positioned between the inner housing and the inner plate.

14. A lock assembly, comprising:

an inner housing positionable on one side of a structure, the inner housing having an aperture extending through a wall of the inner housing;

an outer housing positionable on an opposite side of the structure;

a retainer aligned with the aperture in the inner housing; and

a threaded fastener configured to slide through the aperture in the inner housing and threadingly engage the outer housing;

wherein the retainer permits the threaded fastener to slide through the aperture in the inner housing and engages the threaded fastener to maintain the threaded fastener in the aperture; and

wherein the retainer is transitionable from a first configuration which permits the threaded fastener to slide through the aperture in the inner housing to a second configuration which maintains the threaded fastener in the aperture.

15. A method, comprising:

coupling a fastener to an inner housing of a lock assembly for a door, wherein the coupling includes positioning the fastener through an aperture in the inner housing and retaining the fastener within the aperture via a retainer engaged with a shank portion of the fastener;

positioning the inner housing on a first side of the door;

sliding the fastener through an opening in the door; and

engaging the fastener with an outer housing positioned on an opposite side of the door.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the fastener comprises a threaded fastener; and

wherein the engaging comprises threading the threaded fastener into threaded engagement with the outer housing.

17. A method, comprising:

coupling a fastener to an inner housing of a lock assembly for a door, wherein the coupling includes positioning the fastener through an aperture in the inner housing and retaining the fastener within the aperture via a retainer engaged with the fastener;

positioning the inner housing on a first side of the door;

sliding the fastener through an opening in the door; and

engaging the fastener with an outer housing positioned on an opposite side of the door; and

wherein the retaining of the fastener in the aperture of the inner housing occurs prior to the positioning, sliding and engaging.

18. A method, comprising:

coupling a fastener to an inner housing of a lock assembly for a door, wherein the coupling includes positioning the fastener through an aperture in the inner housing and retaining the fastener within the aperture via a retainer engaged with the fastener;
