Abstract

A vehicle is disclosed. The vehicle may include a base portion and a modular portion. The base portion may be a four wheel vehicle having an operator area with seating for at least two occupants in a side-by-side arrangement. The modular portion may be coupled to the base portion resulting in a six wheel vehicle. The wheels of the modular portion may be powered by an engine of the base portion.

Claims (46)

1. A utility vehicle comprising:

a plurality of main ground engagement members arranged on a plurality of longitudinally spaced axles;

a main frame supported by the plurality of main ground engagement members, the main frame having at least three spaced apart main frame connecting features positioned at a rear portion thereof;

a plurality of modular ground engagement members;

a modular frame supported by the plurality of modular ground engagement members, the modular frame including at least three spaced apart modular frame connecting features positioned at a front portion thereof, the at least three spaced apart modular frame connecting features each configured to be fixed to a respective one of the at least three spaced apart main frame connecting features to create a non-pivotable connection between the modular frame and the main frame;

an engine supported by the main frame and configured to provide power to at least one of the plurality of main ground engagement members and to at least one of the plurality of modular ground engagement members;

a transmission operatively coupled to the engine, the transmission receiving the power from the engine and providing the power to the at least one of the plurality of main ground engagement members and to the at least one of the plurality of modular ground engagement members;

an operator area supported by the main frame, the operator area including seating for at least two occupants in a side-by-side arrangement, steering controls operatively coupled to at least a portion of the plurality of main ground engagement members, and engine controls operatively coupled to the engine.

2. The utility vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the transmission includes a continuously variable transmission.

3. The utility vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the connection between the modular frame and the main frame is a rigid connection.

4. The utility vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a rear platform rearward of the operator area supported by the main frame and a front platform forward of the operator area supported by the main frame.

5. The utility vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a hitch receiver, wherein the hitch receiver may be coupled to a rear portion of the main frame or a rear portion of the modular frame.

6. The utility vehicle of claim 1 , wherein:

the plurality of main ground engagement members are arranged on a front axle and at least one intermediate axle; and

the plurality of modular ground engagement members are arranged on a rear axle.

7. The utility vehicle of claim 1 , wherein a plane defined by the at least three spaced apart main frame connecting features is angled relative to horizontal.

8. The utility vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the seating of the operator area is positioned directly above the main frame and forward of the modular frame.

9. The utility vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the at least three spaced apart main frame connecting features and the at least three spaced apart modular frame connecting features are coupled by fasteners.

10. The utility vehicle of claim 9 , wherein:

at least one of the main frame connecting features comprises a first aperture located in a frame member of the main frame;

at least one of the modular frame connecting features comprises a second aperture located in a frame member of the modular frame; and

the first aperture is aligned with the second aperture and one of the fasteners is fixed to the first aperture and the second aperture to fix the modular frame to the main frame.

11. The utility vehicle of claim 1 , wherein:

the main frame includes a main lower frame, a main upper frame, and a plurality of upstanding members coupling the main upper frame to the main lower frame; and

the modular frame includes a modular lower frame, a modular upper frame, and a plurality of upstanding members coupling the modular upper frame to the modular lower frame.

12. The utility vehicle of claim 11 , wherein:

the modular upper frame is fixed to the main upper frame;

the modular lower frame is fixed to the main lower frame; and

the plurality of upstanding members of the modular frame are spaced apart from the plurality of upstanding members of the main frame.

13. The utility vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising:

a front differential operatively coupled to the transmission and to at least one of the plurality of main ground engagement members mounted to a front axle;

an intermediate differential operatively coupled to the transmission and to at least one of the plurality of main ground engagement members mounted to an intermediate axle rearward of the front axle; and

a rear differential operatively coupled to the transmission through a connection to the intermediate differential and to at least one of the plurality of modular ground engagement members mounted to a rear axle rearward of the intermediate axle.

14. The utility vehicle of claim 13 , wherein each of the front differential, the intermediate differential, and the rear differential are lockable/unlockable differentials.

15. The utility vehicle of claim 13 , wherein the transmission further includes a shiftable transmission including a high gear setting for forward driving, a low gear setting for towing, a reverse gear setting for driving in reverse, and a park setting which locks an output drive of the shiftable transmission from rotating.

16. The utility vehicle of claim 13 , wherein the intermediate differential provides power to each of a rear pair of the main ground engagement members mounted to the intermediate axle.

17. The utility vehicle of claim 13 , wherein a plurality of brake units are provided on the front axle and on the intermediate axle.

18. The utility vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the rear axle is braked through the connection to the intermediate differential.

19. A utility vehicle comprising:

a plurality of main ground engagement members arranged on a plurality of longitudinally spaced axles;

a main frame supported by the plurality of main ground engagement members, the main frame having at least two upper main connecting features and at least one lower main connecting feature, the at least two upper main connecting features each including a receiving surface;

a plurality of modular ground engagement members;

a modular frame supported by the plurality of modular ground engagement members, the modular frame including at least two upper modular connecting features and at least one lower modular connecting feature, the at least two upper modular connecting features each having an extension configured to be received over a respective one of the receiving surface of the upper main connecting features and configured to create a non-pivotable connection between the modular frame and the main frame;
