Abstract

The present invention provides an expandable fusion device capable of being installed inside an intervertebral disc space to maintain normal disc spacing and restore spinal stability, thereby facilitating an intervertebral fusion. In one embodiment, the fusion device includes a central ramp, a first endplate, and a second endplate, the central ramp capable of being moved in a first direction to move the first and second endplates outwardly and into an expanded configuration. The fusion device is capable of being deployed down an endoscopic tube.

Claims (38)

1 . A surgical device comprising:

an implant comprising:

a first endplate, wherein the first endplate comprises a planar portion with protrusions and an extension portion, wherein a height of the extension portion is less than a width of the extension portion;

a second endplate, wherein the second endplate comprises a planar portion with protrusions and a second extension portion, wherein a height of the second extension portion is less than a width of the second extension portion;

a first ramped body positioned between the first endplate and the second endplate, wherein the first ramped body comprises at least one upwardly facing ramp engaging the first endplate and at least one downwardly facing ramp engaging the second endplate;

a second ramped body positioned between the first endplate and the second endplate, wherein the second ramped body comprises at least one upwardly facing ramp engaging the first endplate and at least one downwardly facing ramp engaging the second endplate, wherein the first and second endplates, and the first and second ramped bodies define and create an expanded interior graft chamber when the implant is expanded;

an actuator in engagement with the first ramped body and the second ramped body such that the actuator is adapted to rotate about a longitudinal axis of the implant, but is translationally fixed relative to the second ramped body, wherein rotation of the actuator causes translation of the first ramped body toward the second ramped body, thereby causing expansion of the implant; and

a first socket formed through the extension portion of the first endplate, wherein the first socket extends completely above the planar portion of the first endplate; and

a first fastener configured to fasten the implant to the patient, wherein the fastener is received in the first socket,

wherein the second ramped body includes only first and second through openings, the first through opening configured to receive the actuator and the second through opening positioned adjacent to the first opening, the second through opening being in communication with the expanded interior graft chamber and configured for graft delivery into the expanded interior graft chamber, wherein the second ramped body has first and second lateral sides that each include a notch; and

wherein the surgical device has an overall length along the longitudinal axis and an overall width in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis,

where the first ramped body has a generally rectangular cross-sectional shape such that an overall length of the first ramped body along the longitudinal axis is substantially equal to the overall length of the surgical device and an overall width of the first ramped body in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis is substantially equal to the overall width of the surgical device.

2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the extension portion is removably attached to the first endplate.

3 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a second fastener to fasten the implant to the patient and wherein the second extension portion further comprises a second socket, configured to receive the second fastener.

4 . The device of claim 3 , wherein at least one of the first fastener and the second fastener is threaded and configured to engage a bone of the patient to fasten the implant to the patient.

5 . The device of claim 3 , wherein at least one of the first extension portion and the second extension portion further comprise an opening to receive a blocking member, wherein the blocking member is capable of preventing backout of the first or second fastener.

6 . The device of claim 5 , wherein the implant is configured to expand in a manner such that the first endplate and the second endplate are parallel.

7 . The device of claim 5 , wherein the first ramped body further includes a graft delivery hole, wherein the graft delivery hole of the first ramped body is aligned with the second through opening of the second ramped body.

The device of claim 1 , wherein the second ramped body includes a proximal end and an opposing distal end, the proximal and distal ends positioned between the at least one upwardly facing ramp and the at least one downwardly facing ramp and wherein the first and second openings are located on the proximal end of the second ramped body.

9 . A surgical device comprising:

an implant comprising:

a first endplate, wherein the first endplate comprises a planar portion with protrusions and an extension portion;

a second endplate, wherein the second endplate comprises a planar portion with protrusions and a second extension portion;

a first ramped body positioned between the first endplate and the second endplate;

a second ramped body positioned between the first endplate and the second endplate;

an actuator in engagement with the first ramped body and the second ramped body such that the actuator is adapted to rotate about a longitudinal axis of the implant, but is translationally fixed relative to the first ramped body or the second ramped body but not both, wherein rotation of the actuator causes translation of one of the first ramped body and second ramped body relative to the other of the first ramped body and the second ramped body, thereby causing expansion of the implant; and

a first fastener receiving socket formed through the extension portion of the first endplate, wherein the first fastener receiving socket extends completely above the planar portion of the first endplate and is the only fastener receiving socket in the extension portion; and

a first fastener configured to fasten the implant to the patient, wherein the fastener is received in the first fastener receiving socket,

wherein the second ramped body includes only first and second though openings, the first through opening configured to receive the actuator and the second through opening positioned adjacent to the first opening, the second through opening being in communication with the expanded interior graft chamber and configured for graft delivery into the expanded interior graft chamber, wherein the second ramped body has first and second lateral sides that each include a notch; and

wherein the surgical device has an overall length along the longitudinal axis and an overall width in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis,

where the first ramped body has a generally rectangular cross-sectional shape such that an overall length of the first ramped body along the longitudinal axis is substantially equal to the overall length of the surgical device and an overall width of the first ramped body in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis is substantially equal to the overall width of the surgical device.

10 . The device of claim 9 , wherein the first fastener receiving socket is removably attached to the first endplate.

The device of claim 10 , further comprising a second fastener to fasten the implant to the patient and wherein the second extension portion further comprises a second fastener receiving socket configured to receive the second fastener, wherein the second fastener receiving socket is the only fastener receiving socket on the second extension portion.

12 . The device of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the first fastener and the second fastener is threaded and configured to pierce a bone of the patient to fasten the implant to the patient.

13 . The device of claim 9 , wherein extension portion further comprises an opening to receive a blocking member, wherein the blocking member is capable of preventing backout of the first fastener.

14 . The device of claim 9 , wherein the implant is configured to expand in a manner such that the first endplate and the second endplate are parallel.

15 . The device of claim 9 , wherein the first ramped body further includes a graft delivery hole, wherein the graft delivery hole of the first ramped body is aligned with the second through opening of the second ramped body.

The device of claim 9 , wherein the second ramped body includes at least one upwardly facing ramp, at least one downwardly facing ramp, a distal end and an opposing proximal end, the proximal and distal ends positioned between the at least one upwardly facing ramp and the at least one downwardly facing ramp and wherein the first and second openings are located on the proximal end of the second ramped body.
