Abstract

Techniques for automated engagement and disengagement of a preload include a computer-assisted apparatus. The computer-assisted apparatus includes an instrument manipulator assembly including a preload assembly and a controller coupled to the instrument manipulator assembly. The controller is configured to move the instrument manipulator assembly to a fully withdrawn position and command the preload assembly to engage a preload. In some embodiments, engaging the preload causes the preload assembly to assert a preload force on a motor pack of the instrument manipulator assembly. In some embodiments, the controller is further configured to move the instrument manipulator assembly to a home position after the preload is engaged.

Claims (43)

1. A computer-assisted apparatus comprising:

an instrument manipulator assembly comprising a preload assembly; and

a controller coupled to the instrument manipulator assembly;

wherein the controller is configured to:

move the instrument manipulator assembly to a fully withdrawn position, wherein the fully withdrawn position is proximal to a home position of the instrument manipulator assembly; and

in response to moving the instrument manipulator assembly to the fully withdrawn position, command the preload assembly to engage a preload that applies one or more forces to a motor pack in a distal direction relative to the fully withdrawn position.

2. The computer-assisted apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to move the instrument manipulator assembly to the home position after the preload is engaged.

3. The computer-assisted apparatus of claim 2 , wherein:

the instrument manipulator assembly further comprises a housing and the motor pack;

the motor pack comprises one or more drive output disks; and

moving the instrument manipulator assembly to the home position while the preload is engaged causes the one or more drive output disks to extend from a distal face of the housing.

4. The computer-assisted apparatus of claim 1 , wherein, after the preload is engaged in response to moving the instrument manipulator assembly to the fully withdrawn position, subsequently moving the instrument manipulator assembly to the fully withdrawn position automatically releases the preload.

5. The computer-assisted apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the instrument manipulator assembly further comprises the motor pack; and

after the preload is engaged in response to moving the instrument manipulator assembly to the fully withdrawn position, subsequently moving the instrument manipulator assembly to the fully withdrawn position automatically releases a preload force included in the one or more forces on the motor pack.

6. The computer-assisted apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the instrument manipulator assembly further comprises the motor pack;

the preload assembly comprises a cam following assembly comprising a wheel and a body;

the wheel is configured to ride on a preload track;

the body is rotatably coupled to a first pivot pin;

the body has a first end and a second end;

the second end of the body is coupled to the motor pack; and

the first end of the body is coupled to the wheel.

7. The computer-assisted apparatus of claim 6 , wherein:

the preload assembly further comprises a preload engagement arm comprising a first end and a second end, the first end of the preload engagement arm being coupled to the first pivot pin; and

a rolling pin mounted in the second end of the preload engagement arm.

8. The computer-assisted apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the preload assembly further comprises:

a second pivot pin;

a preload engage and disengage arm rotatably coupled to the second pivot pin, the preload engage and disengage arm being couplable to and decouplable from the rolling pin; and

a torsional spring mounted on the second pivot pin and coupled to the preload engage and disengage arm, the torsional spring being configured to provide a torque on the preload engage and disengage arm to hold the preload engage and disengage arm in a disengaged position from the rolling pin.

9. The computer-assisted apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the preload assembly further comprises an electronic actuator coupled to the preload engage and disengage arm and to the controller, wherein when an engage command from the controller is received by the electronic actuator, the electronic actuator provides a torque on the preload engage and disengage arm to hold the preload engage and disengage arm in an engaged position with respect to the rolling pin.

10. The computer-assisted apparatus of claim 8 , wherein:

the preload assembly further comprises an emergency instrument release button coupled to the preload engage and disengage arm; and

activating the emergency instrument release button causes the preload to be disengaged.

11. A method comprising:

moving, by a controller, an instrument manipulator assembly of a computer-assisted apparatus to a fully withdrawn position, wherein the fully withdrawn position is proximal to a home position of the instrument manipulator assembly; and

in response to moving the instrument manipulator assembly to the fully withdrawn position, commanding, by the controller, a preload assembly of the instrument manipulator assembly to engage a preload that applies one or more forces to a motor pack in a distal direction relative to the fully withdrawn position.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

moving, by the controller, the instrument manipulator assembly to the home position after the preload is engaged.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein moving the instrument manipulator assembly to the home position while the preload is engaged causes one or more drive output disks of the instrument manipulator assembly to extend from a distal face of a housing of the instrument manipulator assembly.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein, after the preload is engaged in response to moving the instrument manipulator assembly to the fully withdrawn position, subsequently moving the instrument manipulator assembly to the fully withdrawn position automatically releases the preload.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein, after the preload is engaged in response to moving the instrument manipulator assembly to the fully withdrawn position, subsequently moving the instrument manipulator assembly to the fully withdrawn position automatically releases a preload force included in the one or more forces on the motor pack of the instrument manipulator assembly.

16. The method of claim 11 , further comprising disengaging the preload in response to activation of an emergency instrument release button.
