Abstract

A wireless charging system having a power transmitter may wirelessly transfer power to a power receiver. Shield saturation, such as saturation of a ferrite structure, in the wireless power receiver may occur under some operating conditions. Saturation can lead to disruptive oscillations in power transfer. The power transmitting may include control circuitry for detecting and mitigating saturation.

Claims (45)

1. A wireless power transmitting device, comprising:

a wireless power transmitting coil coupled in series with a capacitor and configured to transmit wireless power to a wireless power receiving device;

an inverter configured to drive an alternating current signal onto the wireless power transmitting coil; and

control circuitry configured to:

detect a characteristic condition at a magnetically permeable structure of the wireless power receiving device; and

in response to detecting the characteristic condition at the magnetically permeable structure of the wireless power receiving device, adjust the inverter using an asymmetric duty cycle to remove a DC bias voltage across the capacitor.

2. The wireless power transmitting device of claim 1 , wherein:

the magnetic permeable structure comprises a ferrite structure; and

the characteristic condition comprises ferrite saturation at the ferrite structure.

3. The wireless power transmitting device of claim 1 , wherein:

the control circuitry is configured to detect the characteristic condition by measuring a current or voltage level and comparing the measured current or voltage level to a threshold.

4. The wireless power transmitting device of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to adjust the inverter by reducing a duty cycle of the alternating current signal driven onto the wireless power transmitting coil in response to detecting the characteristic condition.

5. The wireless power transmitting device of claim 1 , wherein:

the inverter is configured to receive a power supply voltage; and

the control circuitry is configured to adjust the inverter by reducing the power supply voltage in response to detecting the characteristic condition.

6. The wireless power transmitting device of claim 1 , wherein:

the inverter is configured to receive a power supply voltage; and

the control circuitry is configured to fix the power supply voltage in response to detecting the characteristic condition.

7. The wireless power transmitting device of claim 1 , wherein:

the inverter is configured to drive the alternating current signal at a switching frequency; and

the control circuitry is configured to adjust the inverter by adjusting the switching frequency.

8. The wireless power transmitting device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a foreign object detection circuit configured to detect whether a foreign object is present on the wireless power transmitting device, wherein:

the inverter is configured to receive a power supply voltage; and

the foreign object detection circuit is deactivated while the control circuitry is ramping up the power supply voltage.

9. A wireless charging system, comprising:

a wireless power receiver having a magnetically permeable material; and

a wireless power transmitter configured to transmit wireless power to the wireless power receiver, the wireless power transmitter having:

a tank circuit with a wireless power transmitting coil configured to transmit the wireless power to the wireless power receiving device;

an inverter configured to drive alternating current signals at a switching frequency onto the wireless power transmitting coil;

a measurement circuit configured to measure a value representing an energy level in the tank circuit at a measurement frequency that is a function of the switching frequency; and

control circuitry configured to:

detect a characteristic condition at the magnetically permeable material in the wireless power receiving device by comparing the measured value to a threshold; and

in response to detecting the characteristic condition, control wireless power transmission via the wireless power transmitting coil.

10. The wireless charging system of claim 9 , wherein the characteristic condition comprises saturation at the magnetically permeable material.

11. The wireless charging system of claim 9 , wherein:

the magnetically permeable material comprises ferrite; and

the characteristic condition comprises ferrite saturation at the ferrite.

12. The wireless charging system of claim 9 , wherein the characteristic condition causes oscillation in the tank circuit.

13. The wireless charging system of claim 9 , wherein:

the measurement circuit is configured to measure a peak value; and

the control circuitry is configured to detect the characteristic condition by comparing a metric that is function of the measured peak value to a threshold.
