Abstract

A powered surgical cutting and stapling instrument is disclosed. The instrument includes at least one sensor to measure at least one parameter associated with the instrument, at least one processor, and a memory operatively associated with the processor. The memory includes machine executable instructions that when executed by the processor cause the processor to monitor the at least one sensor over a predetermined time period and determine a rate of change of the measured parameter.

Claims (42)

1. A powered surgical cutting and stapling instrument comprising:

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw member; and

a second jaw member movable relative to the first jaw during a closure stroke;

an actuator;

a closure drive to induce performance of the closure stroke in response to a manual input received by the actuator;

a firing drive to eject staples from a staple cartridge during a firing stroke, wherein the firing stroke is separate from the closure stroke;

a sensor to measure a parameter associated with the instrument;

a motor operatively coupled to the closure drive to perform the closure stroke;

a processor; and

a memory operatively associated with the processor, the memory including machine executable instructions that when executed by the processor cause the processor to:

monitor the parameter measured by the sensor over a predetermined time period;

determine a rate of change of the measured parameter; and

control an operation of the motor during the closure stroke based on the determined rate of change of the measured parameter.

2. The powered surgical cutting and stapling instrument of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is positioned on at least one of the first and second jaw members.

3. A surgical stapling instrument, comprising:

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw member; and

a second jaw member, wherein the end effector is movable between an open position and a closed position to grasp tissue;

an actuator;

a closure drive to induce movement of the end effector from the open position toward the closed position during a closure stroke in response to a manual input received by the actuator;

a tissue compression sensor operable to sense a parameter of tissue captured between the first jaw member and the second jaw member;

a motor operatively coupled to the closure drive to perform the closure stroke;

a control circuit to communicate with the motor and the tissue compression sensor, wherein the control circuit is operable to control an operation of the motor during the closure stroke in response to an input received from the tissue compression sensor; and

a firing drive operable to eject staples from a staple cartridge during a firing stroke, wherein the closure stroke is separate from the firing stroke.

4. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 3 , wherein the firing drive comprises a firing bar movable distally during the firing stroke to eject the staples from the staple cartridge.

5. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 4 , wherein the firing bar comprises a first cam configured to engage the first jaw member during the firing stroke and a second cam configured to engage the second jaw member during the firing stroke.

6. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 3 , wherein the motor is operatively coupled to the firing drive.

7. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 6 , wherein the control circuit is operable to control an operation of the motor during the firing stroke in response to the input from the tissue compression sensor.

8. A surgical stapling instrument, comprising:

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw member; and

a second jaw member, wherein the end effector is movable between an open position and a closed position;

a closure drive comprising an input member, wherein the closure drive is operable to motivate the end effector from the open position toward the closed position during a closure stroke in response to a manual input received by the input member;

a sensor operable to sense a parameter reflective of a tissue captured between the first jaw member and the second jaw member;

a motor operatively coupled to the closure drive to perform the closure stroke;

a control circuit in communication with the motor and the sensor, wherein the control circuit is operable to control an operation of the motor during the closure stroke in response to an input from the sensor; and

a firing drive operable to eject staples from a staple cartridge during a firing stroke, wherein the closure stroke is separate from the firing stroke.

9. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 8 , wherein the firing drive comprises a firing beam movable distally during the firing stroke to eject the staples from the staple cartridge.

10. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 9 , wherein the firing beam comprises a first cam configured to engage the first jaw member during the firing stroke and a second cam configured to engage the second jaw member during the firing stroke.

11. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 8 , wherein the motor is operatively coupled to the firing drive.

12. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 11 , wherein the control circuit is operable to control an operation of the motor during the firing stroke in response to an input received from the sensor.
