Abstract

Cell-based sensor devices, systems, and methods for the detection and identification of volatile compounds, and for the determination of the location of the source of the volatile compounds in an enclosed space are described.

Claims (28)

1 . A detection system comprising:

a cell-based sensor device including a plurality of chambers, each chamber containing a plurality of cells in a liquid medium, the cells expressing one or more odorant receptors, and a membrane configured to facilitate transfer of a volatile compound in air to the liquid medium, the odorant receptors generating a signal upon the volatile compound binding to the receptors; and

a controller configured to detect the signal, wherein the signal is indicative of the identify the compound.

2 . The detection system of claim 1 wherein the chambers are provided in a sensor panel formed from laminated polymers.

3 . The detection system of claim 1 further including an optical sensor, the controller provided with the detected signal from the optical sensor.

4 . The detection system of claim 1 wherein the membrane comprises a semi-permeable gas exchange membrane.

5 . The detection system of claim 4 wherein the membrane comprises a polytetrafluoroethylene membrane having a pore size of 0.2-0.05 micrometers.

6 . The detection system of claim 1 further including an air sampling device configured to transfer the volatile compound into the liquid medium in the chambers.

7 . The detection system of claim 1 wherein cells in different chambers have different odorant receptors.

8 . The detection system of claim 1 wherein cells in different chambers have the same odorant receptors expressed at different levels.

9 . The detection system of claim 1 having between 1 and 5 chambers.

10 . The detection system of claim 1 wherein the chambers are in a sensor panel having a fluid inlet channel fluidically coupled to the chambers.

11 . A detection system comprising:

a cell-based sensor device located in a space;

the sensor panel having a plurality of chambers;

each chamber including a plurality of cells and a liquid medium, the cells expressing one or more odorant receptors;

a semi-permeable gas exchange membrane configured to facilitate transfer of a volatile compound in the air to the liquid medium;

each of the odorant receptors capable of binding the volatile compound and generating a signal upon the compound binding to the receptor;

an optical sensor linked to a computer controller and configured to detect the signal and identify the compound based upon the detected signal.

12 . The detection system of claim 11 wherein the space is a public space, airport, train station, bus station, sports arena, school, performing arts center, or a medical facility.

13 . The detection system of claim 11 wherein the membrane comprises a polytetrafluoroethylene membrane having a pore size of 0.2-0.05 micrometers.

14 . The detection system of claim 11 wherein the membrane has a pore size of 0.2-0.05 micrometers.

15 . The detection system of claim 11 wherein the sensor panel is formed from laminated polymer films.

16 . The detection system of claim 11 further including an air sampling device configured to transfer a volatile compound present in the air to a liquid medium in the chambers.

17 . The detection system of claim 11 wherein cells in different chambers have different odorant receptors.

18 . The detection system of claim 11 wherein the volatile compound is a volatile organic compound.

19 . The detection system of claim 11 wherein the cells are neurons.

20 . The detection system of claim 11 wherein a cell in each of the plurality of chambers is genetically modified to express one or more cell-surface receptors.
