Abstract

The present disclosure provides a surface cleaning apparatus that includes a recovery system that extracts liquid and debris with a drying cycle in which forced air flows through a recovery pathway of the recovery system to dry out components that remain wet and/or retain moisture after normal operation of the apparatus. The post-operation drying cycle can dry out components such as an agitator or brushroll, a brush chamber, a suction nozzle, a recovery tank, a filter, and any of the various conduits, ducts, and/or hoses fluidly coupling components of the recovery system together.

Claims (47)

1. A surface cleaning apparatus comprising:

a controller programmed to execute at least one cleaning mode and an automatic drying cycle;

a brushroll provided within the recovery pathway, adjacent to the suction nozzle; and

the automatic drying cycle including:

a drying phase comprising powering the vacuum motor to drive the fan to generate a forced air flow through the recovery pathway;

wherein the controller is configured to operate the vacuum motor at a first power level during a normal cleaning operation and a reduced power level during the automatic drying cycle.

2. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 , comprising a brush motor operably coupled to the brushroll to drive the brushroll about a rotational axis, wherein the automatic drying cycle comprises a brushroll rotation phase comprising intermittently powering the brush motor to incrementally rotate the brushroll.

3. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 2 , comprising:

a rechargeable battery powering electrical components of the surface cleaning apparatus, including the fan; and

a battery charging circuit that controls recharging of the rechargeable battery;

wherein the automatic drying cycle comprises a charging disablement phase comprising disabling the battery charging circuit during the drying phase and enabling the battery charging circuit after the drying phase.

4. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 , comprising a user interface through which a user can interact with the surface cleaning apparatus, the user interface having a drying cycle input control that initiates the drying cycle, wherein the controller is operably coupled with the user interface and is configured to execute the drying cycle upon user-selection of the drying cycle input control.

5. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 , comprising a brush motor operably coupled to the brushroll to drive the brushroll about a rotational axis, wherein the controller is operably coupled with the brush motor and the automatic drying cycle includes a brushroll rotation phase.

6. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the brushroll rotation phase comprises intermittently powering the brush motor.

7. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the first power level during the normal cleaning operation comprises at least one of a first motor speed and a first sound level; and

the reduced power level during the drying cycle comprises at least one of a reduced motor speed and a reduced sound level.

8. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to operate the vacuum motor at the first power level to generate a first volumetric airflow rate during the normal cleaning operation and at the reduced power level to generate a second volumetric airflow rate during the drying cycle, wherein the second volumetric airflow rate is less than the first volumetric airflow rate.

9. A surface cleaning apparatus comprising:

a controller programmed to execute at least one cleaning mode and an automatic drying cycle;

a fluid recovery system comprising a recovery pathway, a suction nozzle, and a recovery tank, the recovery tank and the suction nozzle at least partially defining the recovery pathway;

a brushroll provided within the recovery pathway, adjacent to the suction nozzle; and

a fan in fluid communication with the recovery pathway;

a rechargeable battery powering electrical components of the surface cleaning apparatus, including the fan; and

a battery charging circuit that controls recharging of the rechargeable battery;

the automatic drying cycle including:

a drying phase comprising activating the fan to generate a forced air flow through the recovery pathway;

wherein the battery charging circuit is disabled during the automatic drying cycle.

10. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the fluid recovery system comprises a suction source in fluid communication with the suction nozzle for generating a working air stream flowing through the recovery pathway, the suction source comprising a motor/fan assembly including the fan and a vacuum motor driving the fan, wherein the drying phase of the automatic drying cycle comprises powering the vacuum motor to drive the fan to generate the forced air flow.

11. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the fluid recovery system comprises a suction source in fluid communication with the suction nozzle for generating a working air stream flowing through the recovery pathway in a first direction from a dirty inlet defined by the suction nozzle to a clean air outlet.

12. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the suction source comprises a motor/fan assembly including the fan and a vacuum motor driving the fan, wherein the drying phase of the automatic drying cycle comprises powering the vacuum motor to drive the fan to generate the forced air flow.

13. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the controller is configured to operate the vacuum motor at a first power level during a normal cleaning operation and a reduced power level during the automatic drying cycle.

14. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the fan is separate from the suction source.

15. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the fan is configured to move air through the recovery pathway in a second direction, opposite the first direction, drawing air in through an intake and exhausting air through the dirty inlet defined by the suction nozzle.

16. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the fan is configured to pull air through the recovery pathway in the first direction, drawing air in through the dirty inlet defined by the suction nozzle and exhausting air through an outlet separate from the clean air outlet.
