Abstract

A printing device ( 106 ) includes a laser source and a LCOS-SLM (Liquid Crystal on Silicon Spatial Light Modulator). The printing device generates a laser control signal and a LCOS-SLM control signal. The laser source ( 110 ) generates a plurality of incident laser beams based on the laser control signal. The LCOS-SLM ( 112 ) receives the plurality of incident laser beams, modulates the plurality of incident laser beams based on the LCOS-SLM control signal to generate a plurality of holographic wavefronts ( 214,216 ) from the modulated plurality of incident laser beams. Each holographic wavefront forms at least one corresponding focal point. The printing device cures a surface layer or sub-surface layer ( 406 ) of a target material ( 206 ) at interference points of focal points of the plurality of holographic wavefronts. The cured surface layer of the target material forms a three-dimensional printed content.

Claims (37)

illuminating a spatial light modulator with laser light;

modulating, with the spatial light modulator, the laser light to generate spatially-modulated light;

performing a holographic transform on the spatially-modulated light to form a holographic reconstruction of the hologram as one or more light field regions in a target material, the one or more light field regions corresponding to a body of the three-dimensional object; and

curing a portion of the target material at the one or more light field regions to form the body of cured target material corresponding to the three-dimensional object,

wherein the holographic transformation is performed by one or more lenses, wherein the one or more lenses includes a software lens displayed on the spatial light modulator together with the hologram.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying a plurality of predefined spatial locations corresponding to the three-dimensional object in the target material;

generating a LCOS-SLM control signal and a laser control signal to adjust a position of the one or more light field regions in the target material to correspond with the plurality of predefined spatial locations.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the LCOS-SLM control signal is provided in real time by calculation of a hologram based on image data based on the three-dimensional object, the LCOS-SLM control signal causing the LCOS-SLM to display the hologram.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the laser light is collimated.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the modulation of the laser light includes a phase modulation of the laser light.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the modulation of the laser light is a phase-only modulation of the laser light.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more lenses includes a physical lens.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more lenses includes both a physical lens and a software lens displayed on the spatial light modulator together with the hologram.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hologram is formed as a frequency-domain representation corresponding to the three-dimensional object, and the holographic transform is a frequency-space transform.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hologram is formed as a Fourier-domain representation corresponding to the three-dimensional object, and the frequency-space transform is a Fourier transform.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the spatial light modulator is a liquid-crystal-on-silicon spatial light modulator.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the spatial light modulator is a reflective spatial light modulator.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein a plurality of light field regions are formed at different depths within the target material.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the curing is performed by local heating of the target material.

15. A system for forming a body of cured target material corresponding to a three-dimensional object, the system comprising:

a laser source configured to generate laser light;

a spatial light modulator configured to receive and modulate the collimated laser light to provide spatially-modulated light; and

a hardware processor comprising a dynamic holography printing application configured to cause the spatial light modulator to display a hologram that is a holographic representation corresponding to the three-dimensional object;

wherein

a) the system further comprises one or more physical lenses and/or

b) the dynamic holography printing application is configured to cause the spatial light modulator to display a software lens together with the hologram,

the one or more physical lenses and/or the software lens being configured to perform a holographic transform on the spatially-modulated light to form a holographic reconstruction of the hologram as one or more light field regions; and

wherein the system further comprises the curable target material disposed at a position where it can be cured by the one or more light field regions.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the spatial light modulator is a liquid-crystal-on-silicon spatial light modulator.
