Abstract

A method and apparatus for a horticultural light that projects either a substantially uniform target illuminance onto a flat surface or an increasing target illuminance onto a flat surface. The horticultural light uses a refractor to receive the raw light distribution from one or more LEDs and then distributes an optically varied distribution having a minimized intensity at centerbeam with an increasing beam intensity as the beam width increases. The horticultural light utilizes both ultraviolet (UV) LEDs and non-UV LEDs arranged as an array to produce the optically varied distribution. A lens array is disposed in relation to the LED array and is comprised of UV compatible lenses and non-UV compatible lenses. A device may be disposed in relation to the UV compatible lenses to disallow incidence of UV radiation onto non-UV compatible lenses.

Claims (19)

1. A method of producing light, comprising:

producing a UV light distribution via one or more UV LEDs;

producing a non-UV light distribution via one or more non-UV LEDs;

modifying the UV and the non-UV light distributions into a combined light distribution having a beam width, wherein an intensity of the combined light distribution is substantially maximized at the beam width and an intensity of the combined light distribution is substantially minimized at center beam, wherein one or more UV compatible lenses are paired with the one or more UV LEDs and one or more UV incompatible lenses are paired with the one or more non-UV LEDs to modify the UV and non-UV light distributions into the combined light distribution.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UV incompatible lenses are disposed within an array.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UV compatible lenses are removably coupled within the array.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the combined light distribution produces a substantially uniform target illuminance across the beam width.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the combined light distribution produces a target illuminance that increases as the beam angle of the combined light distribution increases across the beam width.

6. A light fixture, comprising:

a printed circuit board;

a lens array disposed in proximity to the printed circuit board, the lens array including,

a mechanical framework;

a first plurality of lenses removably disposed within the mechanical framework, the first plurality of lenses having a first composition that is compatible with UV light; and

a second plurality of lenses permanently disposed within the mechanical framework, the second plurality of lenses having a second composition that is not compatible with UV light;

an array of UV LEDs disposed in proximity to the first plurality of lenses and configured to produce a UV light distribution; and

an array of non-UV LEDs disposed in proximity to the second plurality of lenses and configured to produce a non-UV light distribution, wherein the first plurality of lenses are configured to disallow incidence of UV light onto the second plurality of lenses and wherein the UV and non-UV light distributions form a combined light distribution.

7. The lens array of claim 6 , wherein the first plurality of lenses include legs compressed between the printed circuit board and the mechanical framework.

8. The lens array of claim 6 , wherein the first plurality of lenses include a secondary optic overmolded onto each of the first plurality of lenses.

9. The lens array of claim 6 , wherein the first plurality of lenses include a removable portion arranged around a circumference of each of the first plurality of lenses.
