Abstract

An ultra-wideband (UWB)-enabled payment acceptance system can include a UWB anchor and a terminal device. The UWB anchor identifies UWB-enabled devices within a vicinity; and in response to receiving an indication of an intent to perform a payment transaction from a particular UWB-enabled device, the UWB anchor establishes a secure communication channel with the particular UWB-enabled device. The terminal device, via the UWB anchor, communicates transaction related information over the secure communication channel to the particular UWB-enabled device and receives a transaction payload from the particular UWB-enabled device over the secure communication channel. A UWB-enabled device includes a processor, storage, a battery, and a UWB chip. Instructions can be stored in the storage of the UWB-enabled device that when executed by the processor direct the UWB-enabled device to perform various processes supporting frictionless transactions, such as with respect to the UWB-enabled payment acceptance system.

Claims (25)

1. An ultra-wideband-enabled payment acceptance system comprising:

an ultra-wideband (UWB) anchor configured to:

transmit a first pulse to a particular UWB-enabled device;

receive a second pulse from the particular UWB-enabled device;

identify that the particular UWB-enabled device is within a vicinity;

determine an approach angle of the particular UWB-enabled device and a distance between the UWB anchor and the particular UWB-enabled device;

determine an intent to perform a payment transaction from the particular UWB-enabled device based on the approach angle and the distance between the UWB anchor and the particular UWB-enabled device; and

in response determining the intent to perform the payment transaction from the particular UWB-enabled device, establish a secure UWB communication channel with the particular UWB-enabled device; and

a terminal device communicably coupled to the UWB anchor, configured to:

communicate, via the UWB anchor, transaction related information over the secure UWB communication channel to the particular UWB-enabled device; and

receive, via the UWB anchor, a transaction payload from the particular UWB-enabled device over the secure UWB communication channel based on authentication and consent processes carried out at the particular UWB-enabled device.

2. The ultra-wideband-enabled payment acceptance system of claim 1 , wherein the transaction related information comprises an EMV data preference, the transaction payload being generated by the particular UWB-enabled device according to the EMV data preference.

3. The ultra-wideband-enabled payment acceptance system of claim 2 , wherein the EMV data preference is one of EMV format of DE 55 data, UCAF format of DE 55 data, AEVV format of DE 55 data, or CAVV format of DE 55 data.

4. A method of operating an ultra-wideband-enabled payment acceptance system comprising: an ultra-wideband (UWB) anchor and a terminal device communicably coupled to the UWB anchor, the method comprising:

transmitting, by the UWB anchor, a first pulse to UWB-enabled devices;

receiving, by the UWB anchor, a second pulse from a particular UWB-enabled device;

determining, by the UWB anchor, an approach angle of the particular UWB-enabled device and a distance between the UWB anchor and the particular UWB-enabled device;

determining, by the UWB anchor, an intent to perform a payment transaction from the particular UWB-enabled device based on the approach angle and the distance between the UWB anchor and the particular UWB-enabled device;

in response to determining the intent to perform the payment transaction from the particular UWB-enabled device, establishing, by the UWB anchor, a secure UWB communication channel with the particular UWB-enabled device;

communicating, by the terminal device via the UWB anchor, transaction related information to the particular UWB-enabled device over the secure UWB communication channel; and

receiving, by the terminal device via the UWB anchor, a transaction payload from the particular UWB-enabled device over the secure UWB communication channel based on authentication and consent processes carried out at the particular UWB-enabled device.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

performing, by the terminal device, a transaction using the transaction payload.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the transaction related information comprises an EMV data preference, the transaction payload being generated by the particular UWB-enabled device according to the EMV data preference.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the particular UWB-enabled device provides access to an asset.
