Abstract

A vein imager includes: a laser emitting a light beam in a first optical path; and scanner directing the beam to form a spot of light on the target, and scanning the beam to move the spot rapidly on the target. An optical element bounces the beam of light from the first optical path onto a second optical path, directing the beam at the scanner. The scanner directs an image portion, received from the target, along the second optical path toward the photodiode, the image portion being an afterglow formed by differential reflection and absorption of the scanned spot by surrounding tissue and blood vessels. A lens is positioned/configured to limit a size of the photodiode FOV to a portion of the target surface, which size encompasses only the spot size and a portion of the afterglow. The limited photodiode FOV thus moves synchronously with the scanned spot.

Claims (37)

1. A vein imaging apparatus, said vein imaging apparatus configured to limit an image field of view (FOV) to exclude at least a portion of a target surface to image subcutaneous blood vessels beneath the target surface, said vein imaging apparatus comprising:

a laser configured to emit a beam of light at a first wavelength, directed in a first optical path;

a scanner, said scanner configured to direct said beam of light to form a spot of light on the target surface;

said scanner further configured to scan said beam of laser light to move said spot of light rapidly on the target surface to generate an image formed by differential amounts of absorption and reflection of said moving spot of light and an afterglow by surrounding tissue and subcutaneous blood vessels;

an optical detector;

an optical element, said optical element configured to bounce said beam of light from said first optical path onto a second optical path, and direct said beam of light at said scanner;

wherein said scanner directs said image at said first wavelength, received from the target surface, along said second optical path and to said optical detector;

wherein said optical detector is configured to receive said image at said first wavelength; and

a lens, said lens positioned between said optical detector and said optical element, wherein said lens is a focusing lens configured to limit a size of an image FOV of said optical detector to a portion of the target surface, wherein a size of said portion of the target surface for said limited FOV of said optical detector comprises: a size of said spot of laser light and at least a portion of said afterglow.

2. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said limited FOV of said optical detector is configured to move synchronously with said scanned spot of laser light via said scanner.

3. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein said lens is configured to position said limited FOV of said optical detector to include said spot and to extend beyond said spot.

4. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein said lens is configured to position said limited FOV of said optical detector to exclude said spot and to include at least a second portion of said afterglow.

5. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein said scanner is further configured to scan said beam of laser light in a raster pattern.

6. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein said scanner comprises:

a single scanning mirror deflectable in two orthogonal directions.

7. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein said scanner comprises:

a first unidirectional mirror, said first unidirectional mirror configured to scan said beam in a first direction and at a first frequency;

a second unidirectional mirror, said second unidirectional mirror configured to scan said beam in a second direction being toward the target surface, and at a second frequency; and

wherein said scan of said first mirror and said scan of said second mirror produces said scanned raster pattern.

8. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 7 ,

wherein said lens comprises a Fresnel lens.

9. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 7 ,

wherein said lens comprises a cylindrical lens, said cylindrical lens configured to provide an elongated FOV for said optical detector.

10. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein said cylindrical lens is configured to reduce said FOV of said optical detector in only one direction of said raster pattern.

11. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 7 , further comprising:

a second laser, said second laser configured to emit a beam of visible light at a second wavelength to project said image portion onto the target surface; and

a dichroic optical filter element, said dichroic optical filter element configured to align said beam of visible light from said second laser with said beam of light from said first laser, and be scanned simultaneously by said scanner.

12. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said second laser projects said image portion onto the target surface delayed with respect to said image portion being received by said optical detector.

13. A vein imaging apparatus comprising:

a laser configured to emit a beam of light at a first wavelength in a first optical path;

a mirror, said mirror configured to bounce said beam of light from said first optical path onto a second optical path;

a scanner, said scanner configured to direct said beam of light from said second optical path onto a target surface to form a spot of light on the target surface; said scanner further configured to scan said beam of laser light to move said spot of light rapidly on the target surface in a pattern to generate an image formed by differential amounts of absorption and reflection of said scanned spot and an afterglow by surrounding tissue and subcutaneous blood vessels;

an optical detector;

wherein said scanner is configured to direct said image at said first wavelength, received from the target surface, along said second optical path;

wherein said optical detector is positioned in line with said second optical path and is thereby configured to receive said image at said first wavelength;

a lens, said lens positioned between said optical detector and said mirror, wherein said lens is a focusing lens configured to limit a size of a field of view (FOV) of said optical detector to a portion of the target surface comprising: said spot of laser light and at least a portion of said afterglow; and

wherein said size-limited FOV of said optical detector is configured to move synchronously with said scanned spot of laser light via said scanner.
