Abstract

A phased array includes a laminar substrate having both 1) a plurality of elements forming a patch phased array, and 2) a plurality of integrated circuits. Each integrated circuit is configured to control receipt and transmission of signals by the plurality of elements in the patch phased array. The integrated circuits also are configured to operate the phased array at one or more satellite frequencies—to transmit signals to and/or receive signals from a satellite. Each integrated circuit physically couples with one corresponding element so that incoming signals are received by the corresponding element in a first polarization, and outgoing signals are transmitted by the corresponding element in a second polarization. The phased array isolates the transmit signals from the receive signals by orienting the first and second polarizations differently.

Claims (43)

a transmit circuit configured to set phase and gain parameters for outgoing signals to the corresponding element; and

separate receive and transmit element interfaces for respectively coupling the receive circuit and the transmit circuit to different polarization interfaces of the corresponding element so that incoming signals of a first polarization received by the corresponding element are provided to the receive circuit via the receive element interface and outgoing signals of a second polarization are provided by the transmit circuit to the corresponding element via the transmit element interface, the first and second polarizations being different so that the incoming signals and the outgoing signals are polarization-isolated from one another,

the integrated circuit being configured to use time-division duplex waveforms to receive the incoming signals in designated receive time slots and transmit the outgoing signals in designated transmit time slots to further isolate the incoming signals and the outgoing signals.

2. A beamforming integrated circuit according to claim 1 , wherein the different polarizations are orthogonal to one another.

3. A beamforming integrated circuit according to claim 1 , wherein integrated circuit is configured to operate using 5G protocols.
