Abstract

A communications connection system includes an adapter module defining at least first and second ports and at least one media reading interface mounted at one of the ports. The first adapter module is configured to receive a fiber optic connector at each port. Some type of connectors may be formed as duplex connector arrangements. Some types of adapters may include ports without media reading interfaces. Some types of media reading interfaces include contact members having three contact sections.

Claims (23)

1. An optical connection arrangement comprising:

a circuit board extending along a length;

a plurality of optical adapters arranged in a row that extends parallel with the length of the circuit board, each of the optical adapters defining oppositely facing ports, each of the optical adapters defining an aperture that extends between an interior of the optical adapter and an exterior of the optical adapter; and

a presence sensing arrangement including a plurality of contact pads and a plurality of contact members, the contact pads being disposed on the circuit board in a row that extends along the length of the circuit board, each contact pad aligning with the aperture of one of the optical adapters, each of the contact members aligning with one of the contact pads, each of the contact members including a portion configured to move between a first position when a first of the ports of a respective one of the optical adapters is available and a second position when the first port of the respective optical adapter is occupied, each portion being configured to engage the respective contact pad through the aperture of the respective optical adapter when the first port of the respective optical adapter is occupied, and the portion of each contact member being disposed within the respective optical adapter and spaced from the contact pad when the first port of the respective optical adapter is available.

2. The optical connection arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the contact members flex to move the portions between the first and second positions.

3. The optical connection arrangement of claim 1 , wherein each contact member is disposed fully within the optical adapter when the first port of the respective optical adapter is available.

4. The optical connection arrangement of claim 1 , wherein each contact member includes a second portion disposed external of the optical adapter regardless of whether the first port of the respective optical adapter is available or occupied.

5. The optical connection arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the aperture of each optical adapter aligns with a plurality of the contact pads.

6. The optical connection arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the circuit board extends along a depth; wherein the plurality of contact pads is a first plurality of contact pads; and wherein the presence sensing arrangement includes a second plurality of contact pads, each of the contact pads of the second plurality being aligned along the depth of the circuit board with one of the contact pads of the first plurality.

7. The optical connection arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the optical adapters are mounted to the circuit board.

8. The optical connection arrangement of claim 1 , further comprising a port blocker disposed at the first port of one of the optical adapters.

9. The optical connection arrangement of claim 8 , wherein the port blocker is configured to avoid triggering the presence sensing arrangement.

10. The optical connection arrangement of claim 9 , wherein the port blocker is shaped to inhibit engaging the respective contact member.

11. The optical connection arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the optical connection arrangement includes a rack-mounted connector assembly.

12. The optical connection arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the contact member completes a circuit when disposed in the second position.

13. The optical connection arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the contact member completes a circuit when disposed in the first position.

14. The optical connection arrangement of claim 1 , further comprising a processor electrically coupled to the circuit board, the processor receiving signals from the presence sensing arrangement.

15. The optical connection arrangement of claim 14 , wherein the processor is mounted to the circuit board.

16. The optical connection arrangement of claim 14 , wherein the circuit board is a first circuit board; and wherein the processor is mounted to a separate second circuit board that is coupled to the first circuit board.

17. The optical connection arrangement of claim 16 , wherein the second circuit board is coupled to the first circuit board via a cable connection.

18. The optical connection arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the optical connection arrangement forms a communications panel.

19. The optical connection arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the presence sensing arrangement also forms a media reading interface.

20. The optical connection arrangement of claim 19 , wherein the media reading interface includes a subset of the contact members.
