Abstract

A cellular data communication network includes a BBU connected to a UPF by an IP network. A first translation module translates GFP packets into IP packets transmitted over the IP network. A second translation module translates the IP packets back into IP packets and forwards the IP packets to the UPF. A PFCP proxy intercepts control packets of the UPF. Information snooped by the PFCP proxy is provided to a routing/SDN controller that programs the translation modules and a routing module to perform routing of packets in bypass of the UPF.

1. A cellular data communication system comprising:

an antenna for receiving signals from user equipment;

a packet radio network coupled to the antenna;

an internet protocol network;

a translation module positioned between the packet radio network and the internet protocol network;

a user plane function configured to manage communication with the user equipment; and

a proxy interposed between the packet radio network and the user plane function, the proxy being configured to:

intercept traffic any of to and from the user plane function;

snoop session information from the traffic; and

invoke programming of the translation module to translate first packets received over the packet radio network into second packets transmitted over the internet protocol network according to the session information.

2. The cellular data communication system of claim 1 , wherein the session information comprises information describing a protocol tunnel terminated by the user plane function, the session information including any of a tunnel endpoint (TEP) identifier (TEID) of the user plane function, a local TEID of the protocol tunnel, and an address of the user equipment.

3. The cellular data communication system of claim 2 , wherein the local TEID references a gNodeB.

4. The cellular data communication system of claim 2 , wherein the protocol tunnel is a general packet radio service (GPRS) tunneling protocol (GTP) tunnel.

5. The cellular data communication system of claim 4 , wherein the first packets are formatted according to GTP and the translation module is programmed to translate the first packets into the second packets such that the second packets are formatted according to internet protocol.

6. The cellular data communication system of claim 5 , wherein the second packets include sufficient information to convert the second packets back into GTP packets.

7. The cellular data communication system of claim 5 , further comprising a routing and software defined network (routing/SDN) controller interposed between the proxy and the translation module, the routing/SDN controller programmed to program the translation module using the information.

8. The cellular data communication system of claim 7 , wherein the routing/SDN controller includes a border gateway protocol (BGP) speaker.

9. The cellular data communication system of claim 5 , further comprising a routing module coupling the internet protocol network to an external network;

wherein the proxy is further programmed to invoke programming of the routing module according to the session information.

10. The cellular data communication system of claim 5 , wherein:

the translation module is a first translation module;

the cellular data communication system further comprises a second translation module such that a path between the antenna and the user plane function includes the first translation module, the internet protocol network, and the second translation module; and

the proxy is configured to invoke programming of the second translation module according to the session information to translate the second packets into third packets, the third packets formatted according to GTP.

11. A method comprising:

providing a cellular data communication system including an antenna for receiving signals from user equipment, a packet radio network coupled to the antenna, an internet protocol network, a user plane function configured to manage communication with the user equipment;

providing a translation module positioned between the packet radio network and the internet protocol network;

receiving, by a proxy interposed between the translation module and the antenna, first packets addressed to the user plane function;

snooping, by the proxy, session information from the first packets and forwarding the first packets to the user plane function;

invoking, by the proxy, programming of the translation module according to the session information;

receiving, by the translation module, second packets from the packet radio network;

translating, by the translation module, the second packets according to the programming to obtain third packets; and

transmitting the third packets over the internet protocol network.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the session information comprises information describing a protocol tunnel terminated by the user plane function, the session information including any of a tunnel endpoint (TEP) identifier (TEID) of the user plane function, a local TEID of the protocol tunnel, and an address of the user equipment.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the local TEID references a baseband unit between the user plane function and the antenna.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the protocol tunnel is a general packet radio service (GPRS) tunneling protocol (GTP) tunnel.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein translating the second packets according to the programming to obtain third packets comprises translating the second packets from formatting according to GTP to the third packets formatted according to internet protocol.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein translating the second packets according to the programming to obtain third packets comprises translating the second packets from formatting according to GTP to the third packets formatted according to internet protocol such that the third packets include sufficient information to translate the third packets back into fourth packets formatted according to GTP.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein invoking programming of the translation module according to the session information comprises:

providing, by the proxy, the session information to a routing and software defined network (routing/SDN) controller interposed between the proxy and the translation module; and
