Abstract

Systems and methods for operating a controlled device via an activation accessory that includes a vibration motor, a wearable module including a clench-detection sensor (e.g., a Hal effect sensor), and a communication element. The sensor is coupled to a controller, which has an output coupled to a control signal interface and another output coupled to the vibration motor. The controller is programmed to receive and evaluate input signals from the sensor to determine whether or not they represent a command for the controlled device by assessing the input signals for a signal pattern indicative of a plurality of volitional jaw clench actions of a wearer of the wearable module. If/when the processor determines that the input signals represent the command, then it decodes the command and transmits an associated control signal to the controlled device via the control signal interface as well as an activation signal to the vibration motor.

Claims (17)

1. An activation accessory for a controlled device, comprising:

a head-worn unit having a moveable portion attached to a frame by a hinge;

a module including a switch element with a paddle switch and a Hall effect sensor configured to be activated when the paddle switch is depressed, the module being fitted to the moveable portion of the head-worn unit and being positionable to allow the switch element of the module to contact a side of a wearer's face when the head-worn unit is worn by the wearer, the switch element of the module being communicably coupled to a controller which has a first output coupled to a control signal interface, the controller of the module including a processor and a memory coupled to the processor and storing processor-executable instructions, which instructions when executed by the processor cause the processor to perform steps including:

receiving, from the Hall effect sensor, first input signals,

evaluating the first input signals to determine whether or not the first input signals represent a command for said controlled device by assessing said first input signals for a signal pattern indicative of a plurality of volitional jaw clench actions of a wearer of the activation accessory, and

if said processor determines that the first input signals represent the command, then decoding the command and transmitting an associated control signal to the control signal interface, otherwise if said processor determines that the first input signals do not represent the command, not transmitting the control signal and proceeding to evaluate second input signals from the Hall effect sensor in a like manner as the first input signals.

2. The activation accessory of claim 1 , further comprising a vibration motor coupled to a second output of the controller, wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform further steps including, if said processor determines that the first input signals represent the command, then transmitting a pulse width modulated activation signal to the vibration motor.

3. The activation accessory of claim 1 , further comprising a communication element coupled to the control signal interface and adapted to transmit the control signal from the processor to the controlled device, wherein the controlled device is an illumination element.

4. The activation accessory of claim 3 , further comprising a communication element coupled to the control signal interface and adapted to transmit the control signal from the processor to the controlled device, wherein the illumination element includes one or more light emitting diodes.

5. The activation accessory of claim 1 , further comprising a communication element coupled to the control signal interface and adapted to transmit the control signal from the processor to the controlled device, wherein the controlled device is a push-to-talk (PTT) adapter for a two-way radio.

6. The activation accessory of claim 1 , further comprising a communication element coupled to the control signal interface and adapted to transmit the control signal from the processor to the controlled device, wherein the controlled device is a two-way radio.

7. The activation accessory of claim 1 , further comprising a visual activation indicator coupled to receive a visual activation indication signal from the controller and wherein the processor-executable instructions, when executed by the processor, further cause the processor to perform steps including transmitting the visual activation indication signal to the visual activation indicator if said processor determines that the first input signals represent the command.

8. The activation accessory of claim 7 , wherein the visual activation indicator comprises a light emitting diode.

9. The activation accessory of claim 1 , wherein assessing said first input signals for the signal pattern indicative of a plurality of volitional jaw clench actions of a wearer of the wearable module comprises evaluating the first input signals against a stored library of command signal representations, each command signal representation characterizing an associated command for the controlled device.

10. The activation accessory of claim 1 , wherein said first input signals are assessed according to respective power spectral densities of the first input signals within specified time periods.

11. The activation accessory of claim 1 , wherein said first input signals are assessed according to count values of the Hall effect sensor received within a specified time period.

12. The activation accessory of claim 1 , wherein assessing said first input signals for the signal pattern indicative of a plurality of volitional jaw clench actions of a wearer of the wearable module comprises evaluating the first input signals against a trained model of command signal representations, each command signal representation characterizing an associated command for the controlled device.
