Abstract

The present invention relates to novel lignin-derived compounds and compositions comprising the same and their use as redox flow battery electrolytes. The invention further provides a method for preparing said compounds and compositions as well as a redox flow battery comprising said compounds and compositions. Additionally, an assembly for carrying out the inventive method is provided.

Claims (60)

1. A redox flow battery, comprising a substituted low molecular weight aromatic compound or a composition comprising the compound, wherein the compound is characterized by any one of General Formulas (3)-(6);

wherein,

each R 1 -R 4 in General Formula (3),

each R 1 -R 6 in General Formula (4),

each R 1 -R 6 in General Formula (5), and

each R 1 -R 8 in General Formula (6)

is independently selected from

—H, -Alkyl, -AlkylG a , -Aryl, —SO 3 H, —SO 3 − , —SO 3 H/—SO 3 − , —PO 3 H 2 , —OH, —OG a , —SH, -Amine, —NH 2 , —CHO, —COOH, —COOG a , —CN, —CONH 2 , —CONHG a , —CONG a 2 , -Heteroaryl, -Heterocycyl, NOG a , —N + OG a , —F, —Cl, and —Br, or are joined together to form a saturated or an unsaturated carbocycle;

wherein each G a is independently selected from

—H, -Alkyl, -AlkylG b , -Aryl, —SO 3 H, —SO 3 − , —PO 3 H 2 , —OH, —OAlkyl, —OOH, —OOAlkyl, —SH, —SAlkyl, —NH 2 , —NHAlkyl, —NAlkyl 2 , —NAlkyl 3 + , —NHG b , —NG b 2 , —NG b 3 + , —CHO, —COOH, —COOAlkyl, —CN, —CONH 2 , —CONHAlkyl, —CONAlkyl 2 , -Heteroaryl, -Heterocycyl, —NOG b , —N + OAlkyl, —F, —Cl, and —Br;

wherein each G b is independently selected from

—H, -Alkyl, -Aryl, —SO 3 H, —SO 3 −1 , —PO 3 H 2 , —OH, —OAlkyl, —OOH, —OOAlkyl, —SH, —SAlkyl, —NH 2 , —NHAlkyl, —NAlkyl 2 , —NAlkyl 3 + , —CHO, —COOH, —COOAlkyl, —CN, —CONH 2 , —CONHAlkyl, —CONAlkyl 2 , -Heteroaryl, -Heterocycyl, —N + OAlkyl, —F, —Cl, and —Br;

wherein the compound comprises a —SO 3 H/—SO 3 − group and at least one other substituent selected from the group consisting of an alkoxy group, a hydroxyl group, an amino group, and a carboxyl group.

2. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the redox flow battery further comprises:

(a) a first electrolyte solution, comprising a first redox active electrolyte;

(b) a first electrode in contact with the first electrolyte solution;

(c) a second electrolyte solution, comprising a second redox active electrolyte;

and

(d) a second electrode in contact with the second electrolyte solution;

wherein one or both of the first and the second redox active electrolytes comprise at least one substituted low molecular weight aromatic compound or the composition comprising the at least one compound.

3. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein 1-5; 2-5; 1, 3, or 4; or 3-4 substituents of:

R 1 -R 4 in General Formula (3),

R 1 -R 6 in General Formula (4),

R 1 -R 6 in General Formula (5), and

R 1 -R 8 in General Formula (6)

are independently selected from

Alkyl, -AlkylG a , -Aryl, —SO 3 H, —SO 3 − , —SO 3 H/—SO 3 − , —PO 3 H 2 , —OH, —OG a , —SH, -Amine, —NH 2 , —CHO, —COOH, —COOG a , —CN, —CONH 2 , —CONHG a , —CONG a 2 , -Heteroaryl, -Heterocycyl, NOG a , —N + OG a , —F, —Cl, and —Br, or are joined together to form a saturated or an unsaturated carbocycle;

wherein each G a is independently selected from

—H, -Alkyl, -AlkylG b , -Aryl, —SO 3 H, —SO 3 − , —PO 3 H 2 , —OH, —OAlkyl, —OOH, —OOAlkyl, —SH, —SAlkyl, —NH 2 , —NHAlkyl, —NAlkyl 2 , —NAlkyl 3 + , —NHG b , —NG b 2 , —NG b 3 + , —CHO, —COOH, —COOAlkyl, —CN, —CONH 2 , —CONHAlkyl, —CONAlkyl 2 , -Heteroaryl, Heterocycyl, —NOG b , —N + OAlkyl, —F, —Cl, and —Br;

wherein each G b is independently selected from

—H, -Alkyl, -Aryl, —SO 3 H, —SO 3 − , —PO 3 H 2 , —OH, —OAlkyl, —OOH, —OOAlkyl, —SH, —SAlkyl, —NH 2 , —NHAlkyl, —NAlkyl 2 , —NAlkyl 3 + , —CHO, —COOH, —COOAlkyl, —CN, —CONH 2 , —CONHAlkyl, —CONAlkyl 2 , -Heteroaryl, -Heterocycyl, —N + OAlkyl, —F, —Cl, and —Br.

4. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises at least one or at least two compounds.

5. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the composition is an aqueous composition.

6. The redox flow battery of claim 4 , wherein the composition comprises:

(a) at least one compound according to Formula (3);

(b) at least one compound according to Formula (4);

(c) at least one compound according to Formula (5); and/or

(d) at least one compound according to Formula (6).

7. The redox flow battery of claim 6 , wherein the composition comprises:

(a) at least one compound of Formula (3)(b) (reduced state) and at least one corresponding compound of Formula (3) (a) (oxidized state);

(b) at least one compound of Formula (4) (b) (reduced state) and at least one corresponding compound of Formula (4) (a) (oxidized state);

(c) at least one compound of Formula (5) (b) (reduced state) and at least one corresponding compound of Formula (5) (a) (oxidized state); and/or

(d) at least one compound of Formula (6) (b) (reduced state) and at least one corresponding compound of Formula (6) (a) (oxidized state).

8. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises at least one —SO 3 H/—SO 3 − group.

9. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises at least one hydroxyl group.

10. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises at least one alkyl group.

11. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises at least one alkoxy group.

12. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises at least one carboxyl group.

13. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises at least one amine group.

14. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound by their substitution pattern comprises at least one hydroxyl group and at least one substituent selected from the group consisting of an carboxyl group, a —SO 3 H/—SO 3 − group, and an alkoxy group.

15. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises as substituents at least one alkoxy group and at least one hydroxyl group.

16. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises as substituents at least one carboxyl group and at least one —SO 3 H/—SO 3 − group.

17. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises as substituents at least one —SO 3 H/—SO 3 − group and at least one hydroxyl group.

18. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises as substituents at least one —SO 3 H/—SO 3 − group and at least one alkoxy group.

19. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises as substituents at least one carboxyl and at least one hydroxyl group.

20. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises as substituents at least one —SO 3 H/—SO 3 − group, at least one hydroxyl and at least one methoxy group.

21. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises as substituents at least one —SO 3 H/—SO 3 − group, at least one hydroxyl, and at least one carboxyl group.

22. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises as substituents at least one alkoxy group, at least one hydroxyl, and at least one carboxyl group.

23. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises a methoxy, a hydroxyl, and a —SO 3 H/—SO 3 − group.

24. The redox flow battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises as substituents at least one alkoxy group, wherein the alkoxy group is a methoxy group.
