Abstract

A battery cell includes a first electrode formed from at least one of a metal foil, a metal mesh or a metal layer on a substrate. A second electrode can be formed from at least partially oxidized material in a form of at least one of a metal foil, a metal layer on a substrate, a metal mesh, or a battery electrode that includes plurality of particles on current collector. A layer of an ion exchange material can be positioned between the first and second electrodes, with the ion exchange material capable of acting as an electrolyte in some embodiments.

Claims (16)

1. A battery cell, comprising

a first electrode formed from at least one of a metal foil or a metal mesh or a metal layer on a substrate;

a second electrode; and

a layer of an ion exchange material positioned between the first and second electrodes, with the ion exchange material having sufficient ionic conductivity to act as an electrolyte, wherein the first electrode is formed from an oxidized zinc metal foil and the second electrode is a brass wire mesh laminated with an anion exchange membrane, and the first electrode and the second electrode are laminated together to form a laminated electrodes stack.

2. The battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the second electrode is formed from at least partially oxidized material in a form of at least one of a metal foil, a metal layer on a substrate and metal mesh.

3. The battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode and second electrodes are positioned in an overlapping planar position, and the first electrode is formed from a metal layer on a substrate.

4. The battery cell of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first electrode and second electrodes are positioned in a non-conductive region of an electrical device.

5. The battery cell of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first electrode and second electrodes are positioned in a non-conductive region of a printed circuit board.

6. The battery cell of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first electrode and second electrodes are formed from an electrical trace and positioned in a non-conductive region of a printed circuit board.

7. The battery cell of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first electrode and second electrodes further comprises a zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), steel, iron oxides (Fe 2 O3, Fe 3 O 4 ), or an iron hydroxides (Fe(OH) 2 , Fe(OH) 3 ) containing anode.

8. The battery cell of claim 1 , at least one of the first electrode and second electrodes is a cathode including at least one of nickel hydroxide (Ni (OH) 2 ), nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOOH), manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ), ferrate salts (Fe(VI)), manganate salts (Mn (VI)), and permanganate salts (Mn (VII)), manganese oxide MnO, iron (Fe), steel, iron oxides (Fe 2 O 3 , Fe 3 O 4 ), iron hydroxides (Fe(OH) 2 , Fe(OH) 3 ), copper (Cu), brass, bronze, copper oxide (CuO) or copper hydroxide (Cu(OH) 2 ), silver (Ag), or silver oxides (Ag 2 O, AgO).

9. The battery cell of claim 1 wherein at least one of the first electrode and second electrode is an air cathode.

10. The battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the ion exchange material further comprises an anion exchange material.

11. The battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the ion exchange material can conduct OH− ions.

12. The battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the ion exchange material further comprises a polymeric material.

13. The battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the ion exchange material further comprises a polymeric material having attached positively charged functional groups.
