Abstract

Apparatuses are disclosed having an ultraviolet lamp, a reflector system arranged to project light emitted from the lamp to a region 2-4 feet from a floor of a room in which the apparatus is arranged, and a mobile carriage with operational components for the apparatus. The apparatuses are configured such that the lamp is not moveable beyond vertical planes aligned with a casing of the carriage. Other apparatuses are disclosed having an ultraviolet lamp and configurations for moving the lamp relative to a structure of the apparatuses while the lamp is emitting light. Yet other apparatuses are disclosed having an ultraviolet lamp and a surrounding housing, a reflector to redirect light emitted from the lamp, an actuator for moving the reflector and the housing together relative to a structure supporting the lamp, and a rotator distinct from the actuator for rotating the reflector and housing relative to the structure.

Claims (33)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a germicidal lamp configured to emit ultraviolet light;

a base supporting the germicidal lamp;

a support structure coupled to the base;

an automated actuator for moving the base and the germicidal lamp relative to the support structure;

a processor; and

a storage medium having program instructions which are executable by the processor for:

determining one or more operating parameters for the apparatus based on size of a room in which the apparatus is arranged; and

activating the automated actuator such that the base and the germicidal lamp is repositioned continuously or periodically relative to the support structure while the germicidal lamp is emitting ultraviolet light.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a reflector arranged to redirect light emitted from the germicidal lamp, wherein the reflector, the base, and the germicidal lamp comprise a moveable assembly, and wherein the automated actuator for moving the base and the germicidal lamp is an automated actuator for moving the moveable assembly such that the reflector, the base, and the germicidal lamp are repositioned relative to the support structure.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a user interface comprising a touch-based input control arranged along an exterior surface of the support structure for activating operation of the apparatus to conduct a room disinfection process, wherein the program instructions are further for activating the germicidal lamp to emit light subsequent to receiving input from the user interface to conduct a room disinfection process.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the user interface is further for selectively activating different operation modes of a room disinfection process.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is operationally floor-based and freestanding.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is configured such that at least some light generated by the germicidal lamp is propagated to a region which encircles the apparatus and further such that the light propagated to the encircling region during a disinfection process collectively occupies an entirety of the encircling region.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising wheels along a bottom of the apparatus, wherein the apparatus is configured such that the light emitted from the germicidal lamp is emitted to a region exterior to the apparatus.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , further comprising a reflector arranged at an elevation above the germicidal lamp when the wheels are arranged on a floor of the room in which the apparatus is arranged.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 , further comprising a reflector arranged at an elevation below the germicidal lamp when the wheels are arranged on a floor of the room in which the apparatus is arranged.

10. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the germicidal lamp is vertically arranged when the wheels are arranged on a floor of the room in which the apparatus is arranged.

11. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the one or more operating parameters comprise a movement characteristic of the reflector, and wherein the program instructions for activating the automated actuator comprise program instructions for activating the automated actuator in accordance with the determined movement characteristic.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions are further for determining one or more additional operating parameters based on number, size and/or distance of one or more objects in the room.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising one or more sensors for collecting data regarding one or more characteristics of the room.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor configured and arranged to monitor a parameter associated with operation of the germicidal lamp.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the sensor is an ultraviolet light sensor.

16. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the germicidal lamp is a discharge lamp.

17. An apparatus, comprising:

a germicidal lamp configured to emit ultraviolet light, wherein the apparatus is configured such that at least some light generated by the germicidal lamp is propagated to a region which encircles the apparatus and further such that the light propagated to the encircling region during a disinfection process collectively occupies an entirety of the encircling region;

a base supporting the germicidal lamp;

a support structure coupled to the base;

an automated actuator for moving the base and the germicidal lamp relative to the support structure;

a processor; and

a storage medium having program instructions which are executable by the processor for activating the automated actuator such that the base and the germicidal lamp is repositioned continuously or periodically relative to the support structure while the germicidal lamp is emitting ultraviolet light.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , further comprising wheels along a bottom of the apparatus, wherein the germicidal lamp is vertically arranged when the wheels are arranged on a floor of the room in which the apparatus is arranged.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the germicidal lamp is an elongated lamp, and wherein the apparatus further comprises an elongated reflector disposed along a side of the elongated lamp.
