Abstract

Automatic optical link calibration systems and methods include an optical node with an Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer (OADM) multiplexer including a channel holder source; an optical amplifier connected to the OADM multiplexer and to a fiber span; an Optical Channel Monitor (OCM) configured to monitor optical spectrum before and after the optical amplifier; and a controller configured to obtain data associated with the fiber span including measurements from the OCM, determine settings of the channel holder source needed to meet a target launch power profile for the fiber span, and configure the channel holder source based on the determined settings.

Claims (44)

1. An optical node comprising:

an Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer (OADM) multiplexer including a channel holder source configured to emulate full-fill channel conditions on the fiber span for calibration thereof;

an optical amplifier connected to the OADM multiplexer and to a fiber span;

an Optical Channel Monitor (OCM) configured to monitor optical spectrum before and after the optical amplifier; and

a controller configured to

obtain data associated with the fiber span including measurements from the OCM,

determine settings of the channel holder source needed to meet a target launch power profile for the fiber span, and

configure the channel holder source based on the determined settings.

2. The optical node of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to

calibrate settings of the OADM multiplexer and the optical amplifier.

3. The optical node of claim 2 , further comprising

a Raman amplifier, and wherein the controller is also configured to calibrate settings of the Raman amplifier, with the channel holder source configured to emulate full-fill channel conditions on the fiber span.

4. The optical node of claim 1 , wherein the OADM multiplexer is configured to block adjacent fiber spans thereby containing the calibration to the fiber span.

5. The optical node of claim 1 , wherein, prior to the calibration, the data includes any of Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) measurements, Raman amplifier gain measurements, and fiber measurements.

6. The optical node of claim 1 , wherein the calibration is performed automatically.

7. The optical node of claim 1 , wherein the calibration is performed subsequent to communications being established between the optical node and an adjacent node and subsequent to one or more measurements on the fiber span.

8. The optical node of claim 1 , further comprising

an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) configured to measure the fiber span for some of the data.

9. The optical node of claim 1 , wherein the target launch power profile is based on a fiber type in the fiber span and measured loss in the fiber span.

10. An optical node comprising:

an Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer (OADM) multiplexer including a channel holder source;

an optical amplifier connected to the OADM multiplexer and to a fiber span;

an Optical Channel Monitor (OCM) configured to monitor optical spectrum before and after the optical amplifier;

a controller configured to

obtain data associated with the fiber span including measurements from the OCM,

determine settings of the channel holder source needed to meet a target launch power profile for the fiber span, and

configure the channel holder source based on the determined settings; and

an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) configured to measure the fiber span for some of the data.

11. The optical node of claim 10 , wherein the controller is further configured to calibrate settings of the OADM multiplexer and the optical amplifier, with the channel holder source configured to emulate full-fill channel conditions on the fiber span.

12. The optical node of claim 11 NB further comprising a Raman amplifier, and wherein the controller is also configured to calibrate settings of the Raman amplifier, with the channel holder source configured to emulate full-fill channel conditions on the fiber span.

13. The optical node of claim 10 , wherein the channel holder source is configured to emulate full-fill channel conditions on the fiber span for calibration thereof.

14. The optical node of claim 10 , wherein the target launch power profile is based on a fiber type in the fiber soan and measured loss in the fiber span.

15. An optical node comprising:

an Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer (OADM) multiplexer including a channel holder source;

an optical amplifier connected to the OADM multiplexer and to a fiber span;

an Optical Channel Monitor (OCM) configured to monitor optical spectrum before and after the optical amplifier; and

a controller configured to

obtain data associated with the fiber span including measurements from the OCM,

determine settings of the channel holder source needed to meet a target launch power profile for the fiber span, wherein the target launch power profile is based on a fiber type in the fiber span and measured loss in the fiber span, and

configure the channel holder source based on the determined settings.

16. The optical node of claim 15 , wherein the controller is further configured to calibrate settings of the OADM multiplexer and the optical amplifier, with the channel holder source configured to emulate full-fill channel conditions on the fiber span.

17. The optical node of claim 16 , further comprising a Raman amplifier, and wherein the controller is also configured to calibrate settings of the Raman amplifier, with the channel holder source configured to emulate full-fill channel conditions on the fiber span.
