Abstract

Disclosed is a hermetic AC electric motor that includes harmonics shunting such that high frequency harmonics are shunted from the AC electric motor without the use of one or more high frequency filters in the associated motor drive. A related method of operating an AC electric motor includes shunting high frequency harmonics to a fluid passing through the AC electric motor. Also disclosed is a simplified variable speed motor drive system which eliminates the need for a filter for removing high frequency harmonics.

Claims (49)

1. A compressor system comprising:

a compressor configured to compress a fluid in piping configured to convey the fluid between locations; and

an electric motor configured to turn the compressor to cause the compressor to compress the fluid, the electric motor controllable by a motor drive and configured to shunt heat generated by harmonics to the fluid without use of one or more filters in the motor drive, and without use of one or more filters in an electrical connection between the motor drive and the electric motor;

wherein the electric motor comprises a cage configured to shunt the heat generated by the harmonics.

2. The compressor system of claim 1 , wherein the electric motor is configured to shunt the harmonics to the fluid in the piping.

3. The compressor system of claim 2 , wherein piping is configured to pass at least some of the fluid to the electric motor at which the at least some of the fluid passes through the electric motor at which the harmonics are shunted to the fluid.

4. The compressor system of claim 1 , wherein the electric motor includes a shield configured to shunt the harmonics.

5. The compressor system of claim 1 , wherein the rotor includes a shaft, and the electric motor includes the shield that is located on the shaft.

6. The compressor system of claim 5 , wherein the electric motor defines a fluid gap between the stator and the rotor, and the piping is configured to pass at least some of the fluid to the electric motor at which the at least some of the fluid passes through the fluid gap, and

wherein the shield is configured to shunt the harmonics to the shaft, and the at least some of the fluid that passes through the fluid gap.

7. The compressor system of claim 1 , wherein the electric motor comprises:

a stator;

a rotor in selective magnetic communication with the stator in which rotating magnetic fields are produced that cause the rotor to rotate relative to the stator, and that cause the harmonics in the electric motor.

8. The compressor system of claim 7 , wherein the rotor includes surface permanent magnets, and the cage includes wedges that are interleaved with the surface permanent magnets.

9. The compressor system of claim 1 :

wherein the electric motor comprises a rotor;

wherein the rotor comprises magnets, a sleeve and the cage;

wherein the cage comprises metal wedges positioned between respective pairs of the magnets;

wherein the sleeve is directly connected to the magnets.

10. The compressor system of claim 1 , wherein the electric motor includes:

a stator;

a rotor in selective magnetic communication with the stator in which rotating magnetic fields are produced that cause the rotor to rotate relative to the stator, and that cause the harmonics in the electric motor; and

a shield configured to shunt the harmonics produced in the electric motor.

11. A chiller for a climate control system, the chiller comprising:

a condenser;

an evaporator;

a refrigerant loop that includes piping configured to pass the refrigerant between the condenser and the evaporator;

a compressor configured to compress the refrigerant in the piping; and

an electric motor configured to turn the compressor to cause the compressor to compress the refrigerant, the electric motor controllable by a motor drive and configured to shunt heat generated by harmonics to the refrigerant without use of one or more filters in the motor drive, and without use of one or more filters in an electrical connection between the motor drive and the electric motor;

wherein the electric motor comprises a cage configured to shunt the heat generated by the harmonics.

12. The chiller of claim 11 , wherein the electric motor is configured to shunt the harmonics to the refrigerant in the piping.

17. The chiller of claim 11 , wherein the electric motor comprises:

a stator;

a rotor in selective magnetic communication with the stator in which rotating magnetic fields are produced that cause the rotor to rotate relative to the stator, and that cause the harmonics in the electric motor.
