Abstract

Systems and methods for providing performance feedback regarding a basketball practice session are provided. A user interface associated with the basketball launching machine accepts user input indicating a subset of various locations at a basketball playing area for a basketball launching machine to provide basketball passes for a player to catch and shoot towards a basketball goal for said basketball practice session. At least one detection device ascertains whether the player succeeds in making a goal, and at least one processor retrieves data from the detection device and generates graphical output indicating the player's success in making goals for the basketball practice session displayed in a spatial layout visually corresponding to where the basketballs were passed.

Claims (61)

1 . A system for providing performance feedback regarding a basketball practice session, said system comprising:

a basketball launching machine configured to provide basketball passes to various locations at a basketball playing area for a player to catch and shoot towards a basketball goal;

a user interface associated with the basketball launching machine and configured to accept user input indicating a subset of said various locations at said basketball playing area for said basketball launching machine to provide said basketball passes for said player to catch and shoot towards said basketball goal for said basketball practice session;

at least one detection device configured to, for each of said basketball passes of said basketball practice session, ascertain whether said player succeeds in making a goal; and

at least one processor configured to receive data from said at least one detection device and generate graphical output indicating said player's success in making goals for said basketball practice session, wherein said at least one processor is configured to display the graphical output in a spatial layout visually corresponding to where the basketballs were passed.

2 . The system of claim 1 wherein:

said at least one processor is configured to visually depict said graphical output at discrete positions visually corresponding with, on a one-to-one basis, the subset of various locations.

3 . The system of claim 2 wherein:

said graphical output comprises one or more percentages of the player's successfully made basketball shots for said subset of various locations selected at the user interface.

4 . The system of claim 3 wherein:

said graphical output comprises a representation of at least part of said basketball court, wherein said one or more percentages are displayed in said spatial layout.

5 . The system of claim 4 wherein:

said representation comprises a basketball three-point line.

6 . The system of claim 1 wherein:

said graphical output comprises a visual matrix, graph, scatter diagram or chart.

7 . The system of claim 1 wherein:

said at least one processor is configured to provide said graphical output following completion of said basketball practice session.

8 . The system of claim 7 wherein:

said at least one processor is configured to update said graphical output as said basketball launching machine launches said basketballs to said player and said player shoots said basketballs towards said basketball goal.

9 . The system of claim 1 wherein:

said user interface comprises a number of selectable input locations arranged to visually correspond with said various locations.

10 . The system of claim 9 wherein:

said number of selectable input locations are arranged about a representation of at least part of a basketball court.

11 . The system of claim 10 wherein:

said representation comprises a three-point line; and

said number of selectable input locations are spaced apart from one another along said basketball three-point line.

12 . The system of claim 9 wherein:

each of said selectable input locations are configured to be directly and individually selected by said user; and

said selectable input locations are provided to correspond with said various locations on a one-to-one basis.

13 . The system of claim 12 wherein:

each of said selectable input locations comprise physically depressible electro-mechanical buttons.

14 . The system of claim 1 wherein:

said at least one processor is configured to display said graphical output at said user interface.

15 . The system of claim 1 wherein:

said at least one processor is configured to make said graphical output available at a personal electronic device wired or wirelessly connected to said at least one processor.

16 . The system of claim 1 wherein:

said at least one processor is configured to display data indicating, for each of said basketball passes in said basketball practice session, distance of player from said basketball goal, and entry angle into a hoop of said basketball goal.

17 . The system of claim 16 further comprising:

a doppler-based position measurement system in electronic communication with said at least one processor and configured to determine said distance of player from said basketball goal, said entry angle into said hoop of said basketball goal, a height of shot, and a release angle of said shot.

18 . The system of claim 1 wherein:

said at least one processor is configured to display said graphical output according to various groupings or summaries for more than one of said various locations.

19 . The system of claim 1 wherein:

said spatial layout is made relative to said basketball goal or said basketball launching machine.

20 . The system of claim 1 wherein:

said at least one detection device is configured for selective attachment to said basketball goal.

21 . The system of claim 1 further comprising:

a collection net assembly configured to capture at least some basketballs shot by the player towards the basketball goal and guide said captured basketballs to said basketball launching machine;

a structural assembly connecting said basketball launching machine, said collection net assembly, said user interface, said detection device, and said processor; and

one or more wheels attached to said structural assembly.

22 . The system of claim 1 wherein:

said user interface is configured to accept further user input indicating a number of said basketball passes to be made to each of said various locations in said subset and a pacing for said basketball passes.

23 . A system for providing performance feedback regarding a basketball practice session, said system comprising:

a basketball launching machine configured to provide basketball passes to various locations at a basketball playing area for a player to catch and shoot towards a basketball goal;

a user interface configured to accept user input indicating a subset of said various locations for said basketball practice session;

at least one detection device configured to ascertain whether said player succeeds in making a goal for each of said basketball passes; and

at least one processor configured to receive data from said at least one detection device and generate graphical output indicating said player's success in making goals for said basketball practice session, wherein said at least one processor is configured to display the graphical output in a formation visually reflecting where the basketballs are passed for said basketball practice session.

24 . A system for providing performance feedback regarding a basketball practice session, said system comprising:

a basketball launching machine configured to provide basketball passes to various locations at a basketball playing area for a player to catch and shoot towards a basketball goal;

a user interface configured to accept user input indicating a subset of said various locations at said basketball playing area for said basketball launching machine to provide said basketball passes for said player to catch and shoot towards said basketball goal for said basketball practice session;

a detection device configured to, for each of said basketball passes of said basketball practice session, ascertain whether said player succeeds in making a goal;

a processor configured to receive data from said at least one detection device and generate graphical output indicating said player's success in making goals for said basketball practice session, wherein said at least one processor is configured to display the graphical output in a formation visually congruous with at least said various locations in said subset.
