Abstract

An implantable embolic device having a stretch-resistant member passing therethrough that also serves as a tether for connecting the device to a delivery system. The stretch-resistant member is attached at a proximal and distal end of the device and extends proximally to the delivery device. The proximal attachment point serves to isolate a distal, stretch resisting segment of the member from axial tension placed on a proximal, connecting section of the member. Thus, the portion of the stretch-resistant member being used to connect the embolic device to a delivery device may be placed under tension without placing tension or distorting the implant.

Claims (54)

1. An implant delivery system comprising:

a delivery pusher including a heater;

an embolic coil detachably connected to the delivery pusher;

a monofilament extending from the delivery pusher to the embolic coil, wherein the monofilament is wrapped around at least one wind of the embolic coil at a first location forming a first wrap, wrapped around at least one wind of the embolic coil at a second location forming a second wrap, and attached at a third location to the delivery pusher at a location proximal of the heater;

wherein the first location is on a distal region of the embolic coil and the second location is on a proximal region of the embolic coil.

2. The implant delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the first wrap utilizes an overhand knot, a half stitch, or a surgeon's knot.

3. The implant delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the embolic coil further comprises hydrogel.

4. The implant delivery system of claim 1 , wherein adhesive bonding is utilized at the first location.

5. The implant delivery system of claim 1 , wherein a distal end of the monofilament is attached to the embolic coil at the first location.

6. The implant delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the second wrap is formed around a first wind of the embolic coil and around a second wind of the embolic coil that is adjacent to the first wind.

7. An implant delivery system comprising:

a delivery pusher including a heater;

an embolic coil detachably connected to the delivery pusher;

a monofilament extending from the delivery pusher to the embolic coil, wherein the monofilament is wrapped around at least one wind of the embolic coil at a first location, wrapped around at least one wind of the embolic coil at a second location, and attached at a third location to the delivery pusher at a location proximal of the heater;

wherein the monofilament is further connected at the first location by melting the monofilament to form a ball.

8. An implant delivery system comprising:

a delivery pusher including a heater;

an embolic coil detachably connected to the delivery pusher;

a monofilament extending from the delivery pusher to the embolic coil, wherein the monofilament is wrapped around at least one wind of the embolic coil at a first location, wrapped around at least one wind of the embolic coil at a second location, and attached at a third location to the delivery pusher at a location proximal of the heater;

wherein the monofilament is configured such that it does not wrap around itself.

9. An implant delivery system comprising:

a delivery pusher including a heater;

an embolic coil detachably connected to the delivery pusher;

a monofilament extending from the delivery pusher to the embolic coil, wherein the monofilament is wrapped around at least one wind of the embolic coil at a first location, wrapped around at least one wind of the embolic coil at a second location, and attached at a third location to the delivery pusher at a location proximal of the heater;

wherein an attachment of the monofilament at the second location isolates different tensions between a proximal portion of the monofilament and a distal portion of the monofilament, and so as to improve breakage upon activation of the monofilament and to resist stretching of the embolic coil.

10. An implant delivery system comprising:

a delivery pusher including a heater on a distal portion of the delivery pusher;

an embolic coil detachably connected to the delivery pusher;

a monofilament passing through a lumen of the embolic coil and a lumen of the heater;

wherein the monofilament is wrapped around at least one wind of the embolic coil at a first location forming a first wrap, wrapped around at least one wind of the embolic coil at a second location forming a second wrap, and attached at a third location to the delivery pusher at a location proximal of the heater;

wherein the first location is on a distal region of the embolic coil and the second location is on a proximal region of the embolic coil.

11. The implant delivery system of claim 10 , wherein the first wrap utilizes an overhand knot, a half stitch, or a surgeon's knot.

12. The implant delivery system of claim 10 , wherein the embolic coil further comprises hydrogel.

13. The implant delivery system of claim 10 , wherein adhesive bonding is utilized at the first location.

14. The implant delivery system of claim 10 , wherein a distal end of the monofilament is attached to the embolic coil at the first location.

15. The implant delivery system of claim 10 , wherein the second wrap is formed around a first wind of the embolic coil and around a second wind of the embolic coil that is adjacent to the first wind.
