Abstract

A method for operating an access control device having a processor, a memory, and an internet connection comprises receiving a credential from a user; checking, by comparing the credential to matching credential information that would indicate the user is authorized to enter stored in the memory of the access control device, if no matching credential information that indicates the user is authorized is found in the memory of the access control device, then checking, at a remote cloud server, a list of buffered credential information for the matching credential information that indicates the user is authorized, and if the matching credential information that indicates the user is authorized is found, sending an unlock signal from the remote cloud server to the access control device.

wherein receiving the command from the interface comprises receiving, by the cloud-based system, the command via the API.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the command comprises a command to get information on battery life for each of a group of the access control devices, including at least the first access control device and the second access control device.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising communicating the information on battery life for each of the group of the access control devices to the interface.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

determining, by the cloud-based system, that a respective access control device among the group of access control devices lacks battery life reporting functionality; and

determining, by the cloud-based system, an estimated battery life for the respective access control device.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising: communicating the estimated battery life for the respective access control device to the interface, together with communicating the information on battery life for each of the group of the access control devices to the interface.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the respective access control device comprises a respective lock, and

wherein determining the estimated battery life for the respective access control device comprises the cloud-based system determining an estimation based on information comprising one or more of: when the respective access control device was installed; the manufacturer of the respective access control device; the type of the respective access control device; a number of locks; a number of transmissions; whether the lock has wired backup power; and whether the lock transmits via WiFi or other local wireless protocol.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising converting the plurality of different protocols into the standard protocol.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cloud-based system comprises a cloud-based application.

15. A cloud-based computing system comprising:

one or more processing devices, one or more tangible computer-readable memory devices, and one or more tangible computer-readable data storage devices;

program instructions, stored on the one or more data storage devices for execution by the one or more processing devices using the one or more memory devices, for:

receiving a command from an interface, wherein the command is in a standard protocol;

converting, by the cloud-based computing system, the command from the standard protocol into a plurality of different protocols, comprising at least a first protocol of a first access control device, and a second protocol of a second access control device, wherein the first protocol is different from the second protocol, and wherein at least one of the first protocol or the second protocol utilizes commands having a plurality of separate communication steps, and wherein the converting further comprises converting the plurality of separate communication steps into fewer steps within the standard protocol; and

communicating, by the cloud-based computing system, the command to the first access control device in the first protocol of the first access control device, and to the second access control device in the second protocol of the second access control device.

16. The cloud-based computing system of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of different protocols further comprises respective protocols of one or more additional access control devices, in addition to the first access control device and the second access control device, the program instructions further comprising:

program instructions for communicating the command to the one or more additional access control devices respectively in the respective protocols of the one or more respective additional access control devices.

17. The cloud-based computing system of claim 15 , wherein the command comprises a command to unlock one or more of the access control devices, including at least one of the first access control device and the second access control device.
