Abstract

A “smart ” instrument for mixing ( 100 ), a microfluidic chip ( 50 ), and a system wherein they are used to prepare formulations is provided. The microfluidic chip comprises microchannels and a programmable data component. The system achieves optimal formulations for RNA, antisense, peptides and small molecules in the hands of even novice users.

Claims (22)

1 - 21 . (canceled)

22 . A programmable microfluidic chip for mixing comprising an inlet, microchannels, an outlet, and a data component; wherein said data component comprises instrument operating instructions for an instrument to perform.

23 . The microfluidic chip of claim 22 , wherein the chip further comprises a pre-loaded reagent.

24 . The microfluidic chip of claim 22 , wherein the data component is capable of receiving, storing and emitting data.

25 . The microfluidic chip of claim 22 , wherein the data component comprises a radiofrequency identification tag (“RFID”) with a defined readable range of from 0 to 50 mm.

26 . The microfluidic chip of claim 22 , wherein the microfluidic chip comprises a removable fitted manifold and cover.

27 . The microfluidic chip of claim 22 , wherein the instrument operating instructions are readable by the instrument and direct action of the instrument for microfluidic mixing.

28 . The microfluidic chip of claim 22 , wherein the data component comprises stored data selected from the group consisting of: a status indicator including historical data of said microfluidic chip; a type or a purpose of the microfluidic chip; user instructions for a user of the instrument to perform; and information that is sent to a user interface and appears to a user as instructions and/or options.

29 . The microfluidic chip of claim 22 , wherein the instrument operating instructions are selected from the group consisting of: temperature, delay time, pressure values, flow rates, speed, and distance of movement of actuators.

30 . A mixing instrument for use in association with the microfluidic chip of claim 22 , the instrument comprising a motor, a pump, a microfluidic chip engagement tray, a two-way data transmitter-receiver, a microcontroller, and a user interface, wherein the instrument is configured to read and perform the instrument operating instructions of the data component of said microfluidic chip during use.

31 . The mixing instrument of claim 30 , wherein the instrument operating instructions are transmitted by the two-way data transmitter-receiver and processed by the microcontroller within said instrument.

32 . The mixing instrument of claim 30 , wherein the instrument operating instructions are selected from the group consisting of: temperature, delay time, pressure values, flow rates, speed, and distance of movement of actuators.

33 . The mixing instrument of claim 30 , wherein the data component comprises user information that is sent to a user interface and appears to a user as instructions and/or options and wherein the user information is transmitted by the two-way data transmitter/receiver and processed by the microcontroller which causes a corresponding message to be communicated to a user via the user interface on the instrument.

34 . The mixing instrument of claim 30 , wherein said data transmitter-receiver comprises an RFID reader.

35 . The mixing instrument of claim 30 , wherein said data transmitter-receiver is configured to detect the correct positioning of said ft microfluidic chip on the engagement tray, wherein the correct positioning of said microfluidic chip is detected by interaction of the data transmitter-receiver with said data component of said microfluidic chip.

36 . A system for formulating a therapeutic agent for research use, the system comprising a mixing instrument according to claim 8 as well as a disposable cartridge comprising an interchangeable microfluidic chip comprising according to claim 22 , and wherein the therapeutic agent is selected from the group consisting of nucleic acids, peptides, protein, or hydrophobic small molecules.

37 . A plurality of programmable microfluidic chips as described in claim 22 , wherein:

the plurality of chips are separated into a first group or second group;

the chips of the first group comprise a first pre-loaded reagent and first instrument operating instructions for an instrument to perform;

the chips of the second group comprise a second pre-loaded reagent and second instrument operating instructions for an instrument to perform; and

the first instrument operating instructions are different from the second instrument operating instructions.

38 . The plurality of programmable microfluidic chips of claim 37 , wherein the first pre-loaded reagent is different from the second pre-loaded reagent.
