Abstract

A phase-adjusting element configured to provide substantially liquid-invariant extended depth of field for an associated optical lens. One example of a lens incorporating the phase-adjusting element includes the lens having surface with a modulated relief defining a plurality of regions including a first region and a second region, the first region having a depth relative to the second region, and a plurality of nanostructures formed in the first region. The depth of the first region and a spacing between adjacent nanostructures of the plurality of nanostructures is selected to provide a selected average index of refraction of the first region, and the spacing between adjacent nanostructures of the plurality of nanostructures is sufficiently small that the first region does not substantially diffract visible light.

Claims (24)

1. A spectacle lens comprising:

a first region, the first region being centrally located relative to the optical axis of the spectacle lens and having a non-circular geometric shape; and

a second region, the second being concentrically located relative to the first region and having a substantially annular shape and comprising a plurality of optical elements formed on the surface of the second region;

wherein the plurality of optical elements are dome shaped;

wherein the plurality of optical elements have a predefined width and a predefined spacing between the plurality of optical elements;

wherein the optical elements are arranged in a series of at least four substantially non-circular geometric shape rings within the second region, the concentric rings having a shape corresponding to the non-circular geometric shape of the first region; and

wherein the first region and the second region apply two or more different refractive optical functions to light passing the respective first and second regions.

2. The spectacle lens of claim 1 , wherein the first region and the second region apply two or more different focal lengths.

3. The spectacle lens of claim 2 , wherein the spacing between the plurality of optical elements is substantially uniform.

4. The spectacle lens of claim 3 , wherein the first region and the second region are spaced apart from one another.

5. The spectacle lens of claim 4 , wherein the first region and the second region are refractive.

6. The spectacle lens of claim 4 , wherein the first region is refractive.

7. The spectacle lens of claim 6 , wherein the first region is a single-focus region.

8. The spectacle lens of claim 2 , wherein the spacing between the plurality of optical elements comprises two or more predefined spacings.

9. The spectacle lens of claim 8 , wherein the first region and the second region are spaced apart from one another.

10. The spectacle lens of claim 9 , wherein the first region and the second region are refractive.

11. The spectacle lens of claim 9 , wherein the first region is refractive.

12. The spectacle lens of claim 11 , wherein the first region is a single-focus region.

13. The spectacle lens of claim 1 , wherein the spacing between the plurality of optical elements is substantially uniform.

14. The spectacle lens of claim 1 , wherein the spacing between the plurality of optical elements is not substantially uniform comprises two or more predefined spacings.

15. The spectacle lens of claim 1 , wherein the first region and the second region are spaced apart from one another.

16. The spectacle lens of claim 1 , wherein the first region and the second region are refractive.

17. The spectacle lens of claim 1 , wherein the first region is refractive.

18. The spectacle lens of claim 1 , wherein the first region is a single-focus region.
