Abstract

An endovascular system includes inner and outer catheters, a handle system operably coupled one end of the catheters, and a microvalve coupled to the other end of the catheters. The microvalve is constrained in a radially-collapsed closed configuration for advancement within a vessel to a treatment site. The handle system is operable to displace the inner and outer catheters portions relative to each other to move the microvalve between closed and open configurations. An indicator is provided to visually indicate the extent by which the microvalve is opened within the vessel.

Claims (48)

1 . A method of manufacturing a non-implantable microvalve device for use in a therapeutic treatment in a vessel of a patient, the method comprising:

a) braiding a plurality of first filaments into a tubular form;

b) applying a base layer of a first polymer onto a mandrel;

c) providing the tubular form over the mandrel;

d) spinning the first polymer onto the tubular form;

e) removing the tubular form from the mandrel;

f) reducing a diameter of a portion of tubular form to form an end portion of the microvalve; and

g) permanently attaching the end portion of the microvalve to a catheter.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first polymer is a polyurethane.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first polymer is a thermoplastic polyurethane.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first filaments have lengths, and the braid is formed such that the first filaments are not bonded to each other along their lengths.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first filaments comprise nickel titanium filaments.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first filaments comprise a second polymer.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

applying an adhesive or bonding layer between the tubular form and the first polymer.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first polymer is electrospun onto the tubular form in the presence of an electrostatic field.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the base layer is applied by spinning the first polymer onto the mandrel.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first polymer is bonded to the braid.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first polymer is thermally fused to the braid.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the end portion of the microvalve is permanently attached to the catheter with a sleeve which overlies the end portion of the microvalve and a portion of the catheter.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a sleeve is bonded or mechanically held to the end portion of the microvalve and the catheter.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a sleeve is heat shrunk relative to the end portion of the microvalve and the catheter.

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the microvalve is fused to the catheter.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the fusion is formed by thermally melting the catheter.

17 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the fusion is formed by thermally melting the first polymer.

18 . The method of claim 1 , wherein providing a radiopaque ring at the permanent attachment of the microvalve to the catheter.

19 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the resulting microvalve is self-expanding from a radially collapsed configuration to a radially expanded configuration.

20 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the resulting microvalve when used in vivo in a vessel of a patient automatically changes diameter in response to local fluid pressure conditions about the microvalve.

21 . A method of manufacturing a non-implantable microvalve device for use in a therapeutic treatment in a vessel of a patient, the method comprising:

a) braiding a plurality of first filaments into a tubular form, the first filaments having lengths, and the braid formed such that the first filaments are not bonded to each other along their lengths;

b) electrospinning a base layer of a polyurethane in a wet state onto a mandrel;

c) providing the tubular form onto the mandrel;

d) electrospinning a top layer of the polyurethane in a wet state over the tubular form;

e) adhering the base layer and the top layer to the tubular form;

f) removing the tubular form from the mandrel;

g) reducing a diameter of a portion of tubular form to form an end portion of microvalve; and

h) permanently attaching the end portion of the microvalve to a catheter.

22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the polyurethane is a thermoplastic polyurethane.

23 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the polyurethane is in a concentration of 5-10% solids.

24 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the polyurethane is in a concentration of 15-25% solids.

25 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the first filaments comprise an elastic material.

26 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the first filaments comprise nickel titanium filaments.

27 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the first filaments comprise a polymer.

28 . The method of claim 21 , wherein adhering the base layer and the top layer to the tubular form includes applying an adhesive or bonding layer between the base layer and the tubular form and between the tubular form and the top layer.

29 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the electrospinning the base layer forms a web of second filaments at a lower surface of the tubular form, and the electrospinning the top layer forms a web of the second filaments at an upper surface of the tubular form.

30 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the resulting microvalve is self-expanding from a radially collapsed configuration to a radially expanded configuration.

31 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the resulting microvalve when used in vivo in a vessel of a patient automatically changes diameter in response to local fluid pressure conditions about the microvalve.
