Abstract

Described herein are low-profile electrodes for use with an angioplasty shockwave catheter. A low-profile electrode assembly may have an inner electrode, an insulating layer disposed over the inner electrode such that an opening in the insulating layer is aligned with the inner electrode, and an outer electrode sheath disposed over the insulating layer such that an opening in the outer electrode sheath is coaxially aligned with the opening in the insulating layer. This layered configuration allows for the generation of shockwaves that propagate outward from the side of the catheter. In some variations, the electrode assembly has a second inner electrode, and the insulating layer and outer electrode may each have a second opening that are coaxially aligned with the second inner electrode. An angioplasty shockwave catheter may have a plurality of such low-profile electrode assemblies along its length to break up calcified plaques along a length of a vessel.

Claims (19)

1. A device for treating calcified lesions in a body lumen comprising:

an elongated member;

an enclosure located near a distal end of the elongated member, said enclosure being fillable with a conductive fluid;

a cylindrical conductive sheath positioned around the elongated member and within the enclosure;

a first insulated wire including a first conductive electrode region, said first wire being supported by the elongated member, with the first electrode region of the first wire being adjacent to but spaced from the cylindrical sheath to define a first gap; and

a second insulated wire including a second conductive electrode region, said second wire being supported by the elongated member, with the second electrode region of the second wire being adjacent to but spaced from the cylindrical sheath to define a second gap and arranged such that when a voltage pulse is applied to the first and second wires, current will flow from the first electrode region across the first gap to the sheath and then from the sheath across the second gap to the second electrode region, with first and second shock waves being generated at the first and second gaps,

wherein the first insulated wire extends along a groove of the elongated member that is circumferentially offset from the first gap by an angle.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the first gap is circumferentially offset from the second gap.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein the first gap is circumferentially offset from the second gap by 180 degrees.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein a portion of the first wire and a portion of the second wire are located within the interior of the sheath.

5. The device of claim 1 wherein a portion of the first wire is located within a first lumen formed within the elongated member and wherein a portion of the second wire is located within a second lumen formed within the elongated member.

6. The device of claim 1 wherein a portion of the second wire is located within a second groove formed in the surface of the elongated member.

7. The device of claim 1 wherein a guide wire lumen is formed in the elongated member.

8. The device of claim 1 wherein the first conductive electrode region is located at the distal tip of the first wire and wherein the second conductive electrode region is located at the distal tip of the second wire.

9. The device of claim 1 wherein the enclosure is made from a rigid or semi-rigid electrically insulating material.

10. The device of claim 1 further comprising a radiopaque marker band provided along the length of the elongated member proximal to the first and second electrode regions.

11. The device of claim 1 further comprising a radiopaque marker band provided along the length of the elongated member distal to the first and second electrode regions.

12. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first conductive electrode region comprises a hypotube.

13. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first conductive electrode region is formed by an extension that extends circumferentially by the angle.
