Abstract

A surgical instrument has a staple cartridge housing a plurality of staples and an anvil configured to capture tissue therebetween. The surgical instrument also has a firing assembly configured to deploy the plurality of staples into the captured tissue during a firing sequence, and a handle that includes an electric motor operably coupled to the firing assembly, wherein the electric motor is configured to motivate the firing assembly to deploy the plurality of staples into the captured tissue during the firing sequence, and a power pack. The power pack includes rechargeable battery cells configured to power the electric motor, at least one battery-cell health indicator, and an electronic control circuit configured to assess whether a subset of rechargeable battery cells is damaged during the firing sequence based on at least one measurement performed by the at least one battery-cell health indicator.

Claims (42)

1. A power pack for use with a surgical instrument, the surgical instrument comprising a control circuit and an end effector configured to cut captured tissue during a firing sequence of the surgical instrument, the power pack comprising:

a plurality of battery cells configured to power the surgical instrument; and

a sensor configured to detect a parameter associated with the plurality of battery cells, wherein the control circuit is configured to:

determine, during the firing sequence of the surgical instrument, that at least one battery cell of the plurality of battery cells is damaged based, at least in part, on the parameter detected by the sensor; and

step up an output voltage of the power pack to complete the firing sequence in response to the determination that the at least one battery cell of the plurality of battery cells is damaged.

2. The power pack of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to store a damaged status of the power pack in a memory of the surgical instrument in response to the determination that the at least one battery cell of the plurality of battery cells is damaged.

3. The power pack of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of battery cells are configured within the power pack such that the at least one battery cell can be removed and replaced by at least one undamaged battery cell.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 3 , wherein the control circuit is configured to clear the damaged status from the memory after the at least one battery cell is removed and replaced by the at least one undamaged battery cell.

5. The power pack of claim 3 , wherein the at least one battery cell is rechargeable, and wherein recharging the at least one battery cell of the subset remediates damage to the at least one battery cell.

6. The power pack of claim 5 , wherein the at least one battery cell is configured to be reinstalled into the power pack after it has been recharged.

7. The power pack of claim 6 , wherein, having reinstalled the at least one battery cell into the power pack, the control circuit is configured to determine, during a second firing sequence of the surgical instrument, that the at least one battery cell is undamaged based, at least in part, on a second parameter detected by the sensor.

8. The power pack of claim 7 , wherein the control circuit is configured to clear the damaged status from the memory in response to the determination that the at least one battery cell is undamaged.

9. The power pack of claim 1 , further comprising a voltage converter electrically coupled to the plurality of battery cells, wherein the voltage converter is configured to step-up the output voltage of the power pack in response to a command from the control circuit.

10. The power pack of claim 1 , wherein the power pack is separably couplable within a housing of the surgical instrument.

11. A surgical instrument, comprising:

an end effector configured to cut captured tissue during a firing sequence of the surgical instrument;

a power pack, comprising:

a plurality of battery cells configured to power the surgical instrument; and

a sensor configured to detect a parameter associated with the plurality of battery cells; and

a control circuit configured to:

determine, during the firing sequence of the surgical instrument, that at least one battery cell of the plurality of battery cells is damaged based, at least in part, on the parameter detected by the sensor; and

step up an output voltage of the power pack to complete the firing sequence in response to the determination that the at least one battery cell of the plurality of battery cells is damaged.

12. The surgical instrument of claim 11 , wherein the control circuit is configured to store a damaged status of the power pack in a memory of the surgical instrument in response to the determination that the at least one battery cell of the plurality of battery cells is damaged.

13. The surgical instrument of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of battery cells are configured within the power pack such that the at least one battery cell can be removed and replaced by at least one undamaged battery cell.

14. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the damaged status is cleared after the at least one battery cell is removed and replaced by the at least one undamaged battery cell.

15. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the at least one battery cell is rechargeable, and wherein recharging the at least one battery cell remediates damage to the at least one battery cell.

16. The surgical instrument of claim 15 , wherein the at least one battery cell is configured to be reinstalled into the power pack after it has been recharged.

17. The surgical instrument of claim 16 , wherein, having reinstalled the at least one battery cell into the power pack, the control circuit is configured to determine, during a second firing sequence of the surgical instrument, that the at least one battery cell is undamaged based, at least in part, on a second parameter detected by the sensor, and wherein the control circuit is configured to clear the damaged status from the memory in response to the determination that the at least one battery cell is undamaged.

18. A method of improving the performance of a power pack during a firing sequence of a surgical instrument, wherein the power pack comprises a plurality of battery cells configured to power the surgical instrument and a sensor configured to detect parameters associated with the plurality of battery cells, wherein the surgical instrument comprises a control circuit, a voltage converter, and an end effector configured to capture and cut tissue, the method comprising:

detecting, via the sensor, a parameter associated with the plurality of battery cells during the firing sequence of the surgical instrument;

receiving, via the control circuit, a signal from the sensor, wherein the signal is associated with the detected parameter;

determining, via the control circuit, that at least one battery cell of the plurality of battery cells is damaged based, at least in part, on the signal; and
