Abstract

Methods related generally to the removal of atmospheric pollutants from the gas phase, are provided, as well as related apparatus, processes and uses thereof. A single-stage air scrubbing apparatus is provided that includes at least one reaction vessel, at least one introduction duct, and a turbulence component, wherein a residence time is sufficient to allow the conversion of at least one atmospheric pollution compound to at least one other compound, molecule or atom. In some embodiments, the at least one atmospheric pollution compound comprises nitrogen oxide, sulfur oxide or a combination thereof. Additionally, methods of removing atmospheric pollution compounds from a waste gas stream are disclosed that include introducing a waste gas stream and at least one additional gas stream, mist stream, liquid stream or combination thereof into a single-stage air scrubbing apparatus at a flow rate sufficient to allow for conversion of the at least one atmospheric pollution compound.

Claims (41)

1. A system for treating a gas stream comprising NOx and/or SOx comprising:

a turbulence inducing device disposed in the reaction vessel downstream from the gas stream inlet, wherein the turbulence inducing device is positioned before or after the oxidizing agent inlet and is configured to induce gas flow turbulence or swirl within the reaction vessel;

wherein the gas stream and oxidizing agent combine and are mixed together within the reaction vessel during passage of the gas stream within the reaction vessel and undergo reaction to cause the NOx and/or SOx component to be converted to at least one other compound, molecule or atom.

2. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the turbulence inducing device induces the mixture of the gas stream and the oxidant agent to be in the gas flow turbulence or swirl.

3. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the turbulence inducing device induces the mixture of the gas stream and the oxidant agent to undergo the reaction in the gas flow turbulence or swirl.

4. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the turbulence inducing device is positioned after the oxidant agent inlet.

5. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the turbulence inducing device is a stationary element that is mounted within the reaction vessel.

6. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the reaction vessel is configured to provide a residence time sufficient to enable the reaction to be completed during passage of the gas stream through the reaction vessel, and wherein the reaction vessel includes an outlet to facilitate outlet of the gas stream therefrom after reaction.

7. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the oxidant agent inlet comprises one or more nozzles that are disposed inside of the reaction vessel to disperse the oxidant agent into the gas stream.

8. The system as recited in claim 1 , further comprising a ClO 2 generating device for supplying the ClO 2 to the reaction vessel, and a sensor in the reaction vessel configured to provide information used for adjusting the amount of ClO 2 supplied to the reaction vessel.

9. A system for treating a gas stream comprising NOx and/or SOx comprising:

a reaction vessel with an inlet for introducing the gas stream into the reaction vessel for passage of the gas stream through the reaction vessel, and an inlet for introducing an oxidizing agent into the reaction vessel; and

a turbulence inducing device disposed in the reaction vessel downstream from the gas stream inlet, wherein the turbulence inducing device is interposed between the gas stream inlet and the oxidant agent inlet and is configured to induce gas flow turbulence or swirl within the reaction vessel;

wherein the gas stream and oxidizing agent combine and are mixed together within the reaction vessel during passage of the gas stream within the reaction vessel and undergo reaction to cause the NOx and/or SOx component to be converted to at least one other compound, molecule or atom.

10. A scrubbing apparatus for treating a gas stream comprising NOx and/or SOx comprising:

a reaction vessel comprising a first end and an opposed second end and an internal chamber interposed therebetween;

a gas stream inlet adjacent the reaction vessel first end, and a gas stream outlet adjacent the vessel second end;

an oxidant agent inlet interposed between the reaction vessel first end and second ends,

wherein the oxidant agent is ClO 2 in a gas or liquid state; and

a turbulence inducing component disposed in the reaction vessel between the first and second ends and positioned in the flow path of the gas stream and/or the oxidant agent, wherein the turbulence inducing component is configured to induce a turbulent gas flow condition within the reaction vessel;

wherein during passage of the gas stream within the reaction chamber the oxidant agent is combined with the gas stream to form a mixture in the turbulent gas flow condition, and wherein the mixture undergoes reaction to convert the NOx and/or SOx into at least one other compound, molecule or atom before the gas stream exits the reaction vessel through the outlet.

11. The scrubbing apparatus as recited in claim 10 , wherein the turbulence inducing device is a stationary element that is mounted within the reaction vessel.

12. A scrubbing apparatus for treating a gas stream comprising NOx and/or SOx comprising:

a reaction vessel comprising a first end and an opposed second end and an internal chamber interposed therebetween;

a gas stream inlet adjacent the reaction vessel first end, and a gas stream outlet adjacent the vessel second end;

an oxidant agent inlet interposed between the reaction vessel first end and second ends;

and

a turbulence inducing component disposed in the reaction vessel between the first and second ends and positioned in the flow path of the gas stream and/or the oxidant agent, wherein the turbulence inducing component is configured to induce a turbulent gas flow condition within the reaction vessel; and

a baffle disposed within the reaction vessel positioned downstream of the gas stream inlet and in the flow path of the gas stream passing into the reaction vessel;

wherein during passage of the gas stream within the reaction chamber the oxidant agent is combined with the gas stream to form a mixture in the turbulent gas flow condition, and wherein the mixture undergoes reaction to convert the NOx and/or SOx into at least one other compound, molecule or atom before the gas stream exits the reaction vessel through the outlet.

13. The scrubbing apparatus as recited in claim 12 , wherein the baffle is interposed between the gas stream inlet and the turbulence inducing component.
