Abstract

Methods, systems and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media for fleet management of unmanned aerial vehicles, including flight authorization. One of the methods includes maintaining one or more rules associated with authorizing UAVs to implement flight plans. A request to generate a flight plan associated with a job is received, the request including information indicating a flight pattern comprising, at least, one or more waypoints associated with geospatial references. The flight plan is generated based on the request, and an initial authorization check is determined based on the maintained rules and the generated flight plan. Upon a positive determination, access to the generated flight plan is provided by a ground control system, and the flight plan is implemented.

Claims (46)

1. A system comprising:

a memory; and

a processor configured to execute instructions stored on the memory to:

maintain one or more rules associated with authorizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to implement flight plans;

receive a request to generate a flight plan indicating a flight pattern;

generate the flight plan for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV);

determine an authorization check based on the one or more rules and the flight plan, wherein to determine the authorization check comprises instructions to:

determine whether, after completion of the flight plan, the UAV remains within a number of flight hours between maintenance checks; and

transmit the flight plan to the UAV based on a positive determination associated with the authorization check to enable implementation of the flight plan by the UAV.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the flight pattern comprises one or more waypoints associated with geospatial references.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to execute instructions stored on the memory to:

transmit the flight plan to a ground control system prior to transmission of the flight plan to the UAV based on the authorization check.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the flight plan is transmitted to the UAV for implementation by the UAV to navigate along the flight pattern.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein upon a negative determination of the authorization check, the flight plan is not transmitted to the UAV.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more rules include at least one of a maximum time subsequent to flight plan generation for flight plan implementation, a maximum number of UAV flight hours, a maximum UAV distance traveled, or temporary flight restrictions associated with a geographic area.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein unauthorized UAV hardware or UAV software becomes authorized thereby updating the one or more rules.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to execute instructions stored on the memory to:

determine a second authorization check based on the one or more rules and information associated with the flight plan implemented by the UAV at a location or time.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to execute instructions stored on the memory to:

determine an estimated flight time of the UAV based on the flight plan, wherein determination of the authorization check is based on the estimated flight time.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the estimated flight time is determined based on at least one of a total distance to be traveled, a number of waypoints indicated in the flight plan, or actions of the UAV based on the flight plan.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein to determine the authorization check based on the one or more rules and the flight plan the processor is further configured to execute instructions stored in the memory to:

generate authorization certificates based on the one or more rules, wherein the authorization certificates are used by the UAV to implement the flight plan.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to execute instructions stored on the memory to:

detect an active temporary flight restriction for a location associated with the flight plan; and

update the one or more rules based on the active temporary flight restriction.

13. A non-transitory computer storage medium storing instructions that when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

maintain one or more rules associated with authorizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to implement flight plans;

receive a request to generate a flight plan indicating a flight pattern;

generate the flight plan for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV);

determine an authorization check based on the one or more rules and the flight plan, wherein to determine the authorization check comprises instructions to:

determine whether, after completion of the flight plan, the UAV remains within a number of flight hours between maintenance checks; and

transmit the flight plan to the UAV based on a positive determination associated with the authorization check to enable implementation of the flight plan by the UAV.

14. The non-transitory computer storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the flight pattern comprises one or more waypoints associated with geospatial references.

15. The non-transitory computer storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the flight plan is transmitted to the UAV via a ground control system.

16. The non-transitory computer storage medium of claim 13 , wherein upon a negative determination of the authorization check, the flight plan is not transmitted to the UAV.

The non-transitory computer storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the one or more rules include at least one of a maximum time subsequent to flight plan generation for flight plan implementation, a maximum number of UAV flight hours, a maximum UAV distance traveled, unauthorized UAV hardware or UAV software, or temporary flight restrictions associated with a geographic area.

18. The non-transitory computer storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the instructions to determine the authorization check based on the one or more rules and the flight plan comprises instructions that when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

generate authorization certificates based on the one or more rules, wherein the authorization certificates are used by the UAV to implement the flight plan.

19. A method, comprising:

maintaining one or more rules associated with authorizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to implement flight plans;

receiving a request to generate a flight plan indicating a flight pattern;

generating the flight plan for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV); and

transmitting the flight plan to the UAV based on a positive determination associated with an authorization check to enable implementation of the flight plan by the UAV, wherein the positive determination is made based on a determination that after completion of the flight plan the UAV remains within a number of flight hours between maintenance checks.

20. The method of claim 19 , comprising:

grounding the UAV based on a negative determination associated with the authorization check to not enable implementation of the flight plan by the UAV.
