Abstract

An agricultural harvester includes a crop processor, a grain tank, an unload conveyor, and an electromagnetic detecting and ranging module positioned at or above a top of the grain tank for detecting a fill level of the grain tank and the location of a receiving vehicle relative to the combine harvester. One or more computing devices receive data from the electromagnetic detecting and ranging module, the data indicating the fill level of the grain tank and the location of the receiving vehicle relative to the combine harvester, and use the data to generate graphic data defining a graphical representation illustrating the relative positions of the unload conveyor and a grain bin of the receiving vehicle. An electronic device including a graphical user interface presents the graphical representation on the graphical user interface.

Claims (60)

1. A system comprising:

an agricultural harvester comprising:

a crop processor for separating grain from material other than grain;

a grain tank for storing clean grain;

an unload conveyor for transferring a stream of processed crop out of the harvester; and

an electromagnetic detecting and ranging module positioned above the grain tank and configured to:

scan an inside of the grain tank and at least a portion of a receiving vehicle; and

based at least partially on the scan of the inside of the grain tank, generate point cloud data representing points on surfaces within a scan area of the electromagnetic detecting and ranging module; and

one or more computing devices comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions thereon that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the one or more computing devices to:

receive the point cloud data from the electromagnetic detecting and ranging module;

based at least partially on the received point cloud data, determine a fill level of the grain tank by comparing the received point cloud data to a point cloud data representing an empty tank;

based at least partially on the received point could data, determine a location of the receiving vehicle relative to the agricultural harvester by identifying a flat surface depicted in the received point cloud data and identifying one or more additional features of the receiving vehicle; and

use the received point cloud data and the determined location of the receiving vehicle relative to the agricultural harvester to generate graphic data defining a graphical representation illustrating the relative positions of the unload conveyor and a grain bin of the receiving vehicle; and

an electronic device including a graphical user interface, the electronic device configured to use the graphic data to present the graphical representation on the graphical user interface.

2. The system as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the electromagnetic detecting and ranging module is configured to perform a three-dimensional scan.

3. The system as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the electromagnetic detecting and ranging module comprises a light detecting and ranging (LiDAR) module.

4. The system as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the electromagnetic detecting and ranging module is located on a rim of the grain bin.

5. The system as set forth in claim 1 ,

wherein the electromagnetic detecting and ranging module is further configured and placed to detect a position of the unload conveyor and

wherein the one or more computing devices further comprise instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the one or more computing devices to use the received point cloud data from the electromagnetic detecting and ranging module to generate the graphic data such that the graphical representation also illustrates a position of the unload conveyor.

6. The system as set forth in claim 1 ,

wherein the agricultural harvester further comprises a second electromagnetic detecting and ranging module for detecting at least one of a fill level and a distribution of crop in the receiving vehicle, and

wherein the one or more computing devices further comprise instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the one or more computing devices to:

receive second point cloud data from the second electromagnetic detecting and ranging module, the received second point cloud data indicating at least one of a fill level and a distribution of crop in the grain bin of the receiving vehicle; and

generate automated navigation data for aligning the grain bin relative to the agricultural harvester based on the received point cloud data and the received second point cloud data.

7. The system as set forth in claim 6 , wherein the second electromagnetic detecting and ranging module is configured to perform a two-dimensional scan.

8. The system as set forth in claim 6 , wherein the second electromagnetic detecting and ranging module is located at an end of the unload conveyor distal a body of the agricultural harvester.

9. The system as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the one or more computing devices further comprise instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the one or more computing devices to use the received point cloud data from the electromagnetic detecting and ranging module to determine a fill level of the grain tank and present an indication of the fill level on the graphical user interface.

10. A system comprising:

an agricultural harvester comprising:

an operator cabin;

a crop processor for reducing crop material to processed crop;

a grain tank for storing clean grain;

an unload conveyor for transferring a stream of processed crop out of the agricultural harvester; and

an electromagnetic detecting and ranging module located on top of the operator cabin and configured to:

scan an inside of the grain tank and at least a portion of a receiving vehicle; and

based at least partially on the scan of the inside of the grain tank, generate point cloud data representing points on surfaces within a scan area of the electromagnetic detecting and ranging module; and

one or more computing devices comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions thereon that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the one or more computing devices to:

receive the point cloud data from the electromagnetic detecting and ranging module;

based at least partially on the received point cloud data, determine a fill level of the grain tank by comparing the received point cloud data to a point cloud data representing an empty tank;

based at least partially on the received point could data, determine a location of the receiving vehicle relative to the agricultural harvester by identifying a flat surface depicted in the received point cloud data and identifying one or more additional features of the receiving vehicle; and

use the received point cloud data and the determined location of the receiving vehicle relative to the agricultural harvester to generate graphic data defining a graphical representation illustrating the relative positions of the unload conveyor and a grain bin of the receiving vehicle; and

an electronic device including a graphical user interface, the electronic device configured to use the graphic data to present the graphical representation on the graphical user interface.

11. The system as set forth in claim 10 , wherein the electromagnetic detecting and ranging module is configured to perform a three-dimensional scan.

12. The system as set forth in claim 10 , wherein the electromagnetic detecting and ranging module comprises a light detecting and ranging (LiDAR) module.
