Abstract

A surface cleaning apparatus has a cyclone with multiple cyclone air inlets, and a header that is upstream of at least some of the cyclone air inlets.

Claims (26)

1 . A surface cleaning apparatus comprising:

(a) an air flow path from a dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet with a cyclone and a motor and fan assembly in the air flow path,

(b) the cyclone having a first cyclone air inlet having a first outlet port, a second cyclone air inlet having a second outlet port, a cyclone air outlet and a cyclone axis of rotation centrally located in the cyclone and extending between a first end of the cyclone and a second end of the cyclone, the first end of the cyclone having a cyclone first end wall and the cyclone second end having a cyclone second end wall,

(c) the air flow path comprising a header upstream from the first cyclone air inlet and the second cyclone air inlet, the header is axially aligned with the cyclone axis of rotation whereby in operation air travels through the header and subsequently through the cyclone,

wherein the first cyclone air inlet is a first tangential air inlet that extends outwardly from the first outlet end of the header and the second cyclone air inlet is a second tangential air inlet that extends outwardly from the second outlet end of the header, and

wherein the first tangential air inlet has a first tangential outlet port that is located axially a first distance from the cyclone first end wall and the second tangential air inlet has a second tangential outlet port that is located axially a second distance from the cyclone first end wall, and the second distance is greater than the first distance.

2 . The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the header is positioned at the first end of the cyclone.

3 . The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the header is positioned exterior to the cyclone.

4 . The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the cyclone comprises a vortex finder provided at the second end of the cyclone, an outlet end of the vortex finder is located at a second end wall, the outlet end of the vortex finder has a vortex diameter, and the header has a diameter that is at least 75% of the vortex diameter.

5 . The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the cyclone comprises a vortex finder provided at the second end of the cyclone, an outlet end of the vortex finder is located at a second end wall, the outlet end of the vortex finder has a vortex diameter, and the header has a diameter that is at least 95% of the vortex diameter.

6 . The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the air flow path includes an inlet passage that is upstream of the header and that is axially aligned with the cyclone axis of rotation.

7 . The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 6 wherein the cyclone comprises a vortex finder provided at the second end of the cyclone, an outlet end of the vortex finder is located at the second end wall, the outlet end of the vortex finder has a vortex diameter, and the inlet passage has a diameter that is at least 75%, of the vortex diameter.

8 . The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 6 wherein a plane that is transverse to the cyclone axis of rotation extends through the header, the first cyclone air inlet and the second cyclone air inlet, and the header is centrally positioned in the plane between the first cyclone air inlet and the second cyclone air inlet.

9 . The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 6 wherein the header has a first outlet end that is in communication with the first cyclone air inlet and a second outlet end that is opposed to the first outlet end and that is in communication with the second cyclone air inlet, and a plane that is transverse to the cyclone axis of rotation extends through the first outlet end of the header, the second outlet end of the header, the first cyclone air inlet and the second cyclone air inlet.

10 . The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 9 wherein the first cyclone air inlet extends in a first outward direction from the header and has a first outlet port that is located on a first side of the cyclone and faces a first direction and the second cyclone air inlet extends in a second outward direction from the header and has a second outlet port that is located on a second side of the cyclone that is opposed to the first side of the cyclone and faces a second direction that is opposed to the first direction.

11 . The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 10 wherein the first cyclone air inlet comprises a first conduit having first and second opposed sidewalls that extend in the first outward direction and the first outlet port is provided in the first opposed sidewall and a first extender guide extends downstream from the first outlet port and the second cyclone air inlet comprises a second conduit having first and second opposed sidewalls that extend in the second outward direction and the second outlet port is provided in the first opposed sidewall of the second conduit and a second extender guide extends downstream from the second outlet port.

12 . The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 10 wherein the first cyclone air inlet comprises a first conduit having first and second opposed sidewalls that extend in the first outward direction and the first outlet port is provided in the first opposed sidewall, the second cyclone air inlet comprises a second conduit having first and second opposed sidewalls that extend in the second outward direction and the second outlet port is provided in the first opposed sidewall of the second conduit, the second opposed sidewall of the first conduit is shaped to direct air towards the first outlet port and the second opposed sidewall of the second conduit is shaped to direct air towards the second outlet port.

13 . The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 12 wherein the second opposed sidewalls are curved in a downstream direction towards a cyclone sidewall.

14 . The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 9 wherein the first cyclone air inlet comprises an upstream portion that extends in a first outward direction from the header and a downstream portion that extends axially from the upstream portion.

15 . The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the cross-sectional flow area of the first cyclone air inlet is sized such that the volume of air exiting the first cyclone air inlet per unit time is 75%-125% of a volume of air exiting the second cyclone air inlet per unit time.
