Abstract

Systems and methods have demonstrated the capability of rapidly cooling the contents of pods containing the ingredients for food and drinks.

Claims (42)

1. A system for producing frozen food or drink, the system comprising:

a cylindrical pod; and

a machine comprising:

a refrigeration system with a condenser, a compressor, and an evaporator defining a recess sized to receive the cylindrical pod;

a first motor operable to rotate a driveshaft, the driveshaft positionable at a first end of the recess; and

a dispenser positioned at a second end of the recess, the dispenser operable to open the pod;

wherein the cylindrical pod is longer than the recess of the evaporator such that, when disposed in the recess, the cylindrical pod extends out of the second end of the recess and is engaged with the dispenser.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cylindrical pod comprises:

a body with sidewalls extending from a base defining an open end;

a lid attached to the body extending across the open end of the body, the lid comprising a protrusion; and

a cap rotatable relative to the lid.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the cap comprises a protrusion shearing mechanism.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein, when the cylindrical pod is disposed in the recess, the dispenser is coupled to the cylindrical pod such that operation of the dispenser rotates the cap activating the protrusion shearing mechanism.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cylindrical pod comprises a mixing paddle disposed within the body of the cylindrical pod and rotation of the cap of the cylindrical pod is opposite rotation of the mixing paddle.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the dispenser comprises a gear.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the machine further comprises a second motor operable to rotate the gear.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the dispenser further comprises a cam coupled connected to the gear such that rotation of the gear forces the cam into contact with the cap, rotating the cap to shear the protrusion from the cylindrical pod to reveal an aperture in the cylindrical pod.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the dispenser comprises a protrusion shearing mechanism.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the dispenser comprises a gear operable to rotate the protrusion shearing mechanism shearing a protrusion extending from the lid of the cylindrical pod when the cylindrical pod is disposed in the recess to reveal an aperture in the cylindrical pod.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein, when disposed in the recess, the cylindrical pod extends out of the first end of the recess.

12. A system for producing frozen food or drink, the system comprising:

a pod; and

a machine comprising:

a refrigeration system with a condenser, a compressor, and an evaporator defining a recess sized to receive the pod;

a first motor operable to rotate a driveshaft, the driveshaft positionable at a first end of the recess; and

a dispenser positioned at the second end of the recess, the dispenser operable to open the pod;

wherein the pod is longer than the recess of the evaporator such that, when disposed in the recess, the pod extends out of the second end of the recess and is engaged with the dispenser.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the pod comprises:

a body with sidewalls extending from a base defining an open end;

a lid attached to the body extending across the open end of the body, the lid comprising a protrusion; and

a cap rotatable relative to the lid.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the cap comprises a protrusion shearing mechanism.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein, when the pod is disposed in the recess, the dispenser is coupled to the pod such that operation of the dispenser rotates the cap activating the protrusion shearing mechanism.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the pod comprises a mixing paddle disposed within the body of the pod and rotation of the cap of the pod is opposite rotation of the mixing paddle.

17. The system of claim 12 , wherein the dispenser comprises a gear.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the machine further comprises a second motor operable to rotate the gear.

19. The system of claim 17 , wherein the dispenser further comprises a cam coupled connected to the gear such that rotation of the gear forces the cam into contact with the cap, rotating the cap to shear the protrusion from the pod to reveal an aperture in the pod.

20. The system of claim 12 , wherein the dispenser comprises a protrusion shearing mechanism.

21. The system of claim 20 , wherein the dispenser comprises a gear operable to rotate the protrusion shearing mechanism shearing a protrusion extending from the lid of the pod when the pod is disposed in the recess to reveal an aperture in the pod.

22. The system of claim 1 , wherein, when disposed in the recess, the pod extends out of the first end of the recess.

23. The system of claim 12 , wherein the pod is a cylindrical pod and the recess is a cylindrical recess.

24. The system of claim 12 , wherein the pod is a frustoconical pod and the recess is a frustoconical recess.
