Abstract

Provided herein are energy storage devices. In some cases, the energy storage devices are capable of being transported on a vehicle and storing a large amount of energy. An energy storage device is provided comprising at least one liquid metal electrode, an energy storage capacity of at least about 1 MWh and a response time less than or equal to about 100 milliseconds (ms).

Claims (17)

. An energy storage system comprising:

a container comprising one or more energy storage cells, wherein an energy storage cell of said one or more energy storage cells comprises a negative electrode, a positive electrode and an electrolyte disposed between said negative electrode and said positive electrode, wherein said one or more energy storage cells are configured to undergo sustained self-heating during a charge/discharge cycle, wherein said energy storage cell has a surface area-to-volume ratio of less than or equal to about 100 m −1 .

. The energy storage system of claim 1 , further comprising a control system comprising a computer processor that is programmed to monitor an operating temperature of said one or more energy storage cells or said container during said sustained self-heating.

. The energy storage system of claim 2 , wherein said control system is further configured to regulate flow of electrical energy into or from at least a subset of said one or more energy storage cells.

. The energy storage system of claim 2 , wherein said operating temperature is at least about 200° C.

. The energy storage system of claim 4 , wherein said operating temperature is at least 250° C.

. The energy storage system of claim 2 , wherein at said operating temperature, said electrolyte is in a liquid state.

. The energy storage system of claim 1 , wherein said energy storage system has an energy storage capacity of at least about 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh).

. The energy storage system of claim 7 , wherein said energy storage capacity is greater than or equal to about 1 megawatt-hour (MWh).

. The energy storage system of claim 1 , wherein said negative electrode comprises one or more materials selected from the group consisting of lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium.

. The energy storage system of claim 1 , wherein said positive electrode comprises one or more materials selected from the group consisting of lead, antimony, tin, tellurium, and bismuth.

. The energy storage system of claim 1 , wherein a response time of said energy storage system is less than or equal to about 100 milliseconds (ms).

. The energy storage system of claim 1 , wherein said energy storage system has a power capacity of greater than 1 megawatt (MW).

. The energy storage system of claim 1 , wherein said energy storage system is capable of being transported on a vehicle.

. The energy storage system of claim 1 , wherein said energy storage system has an efficiency of at least about 60%.

. The energy storage system of claim 1 , wherein said energy storage system has a current density of at least about 10 milliamps per square centimeter (mA/cm 2 ).

. The energy storage system of claim 1 , wherein said one or more energy storage cells are configured to undergo sustained self-heating with substantially no overpotentials.
