Separators for electrochemical cells
Provided are separators for use in an electrochemical cell comprising (a) an inorganic oxide and (b) an organic polymer, wherein the inorganic oxide comprises organic substituents. Also provided are electrochemical cells comprising such separators.
1. A porous separator for an electrochemical cell, wherein the separator comprises:
a free-standing inorganic oxide layer, and wherein said free-standing inorganic oxide layer comprises:
a hydrated aluminum oxide; and
an organic polymer that is covalently bonded to at least a portion of said hydrated aluminum oxide,
wherein the porous separator is 6 um to 25 um thick.
2. The porous separator of claim 1 , wherein the porous separator has an elastic modulus of 15,000 kg/cm 2 to 50,000 kg/cm 2 .
3. The porous separator of claim 1 , wherein the porous separator has an elastic modulus of 30,000 kg/cm 2 to 70,000 kg/cm 2 .
4. The porous separator of claim 1 , wherein the separator has a tensile strength between about 100 kg/cm 2 to about 500 kg/cm 2 at 2 percent elongation.
5. The porous separator of claim 1 , wherein the average pore diameter of said inorganic oxide layer of said separator is 30 nm to 50 nm.
6. The porous separator of claim 1 , wherein the inorganic oxide layer has a % porosity of 48% to 62%.
7. The porous separator of claim 1 , wherein the organic polymer is a polyethylene oxide.
8. The porous separator of claim 1 , wherein the organic polymer is a polyvinyl pyrrolidone.
9. The porous separator of claim 1 , wherein said hydrated aluminum oxide comprises one or more of boehmite and an organically-modified aluminum oxide.
10. The porous separator of claim 9 , said hydrated aluminum oxide further comprises organic substituents.
11. The porous separator of claim 1 , wherein said hydrated aluminum oxide is of the formula Al 2 O 3 .xH 2 O, wherein x is in a range of 0.8 to less than 1.0.
12. The porous separator of claim 1 , wherein said hydrated aluminum oxide is of the formula Al 2 O 3 .xH 2 O, wherein x is in a range of 1.0 to 1.5.
13. The porous separator of claim 1 , wherein said inorganic oxide layer further comprises a reaction product of an organic carbonate with the inorganic oxide.
14. The porous separator of claim 13 , wherein the organic carbonate is ethylene carbonate.
15. The porous separator of claim 13 , wherein the organic carbonate is propylene carbonate.
16. The porous separator of claim 1 , wherein said inorganic oxide layer does not melt at temperatures lower than 300° C.
17. The porous separator of claim 1 , wherein said inorganic oxide layer is nanoporous.
18. The porous separator of claim 1 , wherein said inorganic oxide layer comprising the hydrated aluminum oxide and the organic polymer comprises a xerogel layer.
