Abstract

A mobile wireless communication user equipment device (mobile device) logs an inactive duration indicative of a duration of time from receiving a release to inactive message to the transmission of a resume request. The release to inactive message placing the mobile device in an inactive state comprising connection to a network in a connection management connected (CM_Connected) state without a capability of transmitting or receiving user data between the mobile wireless communication device and the network. The resume request requesting transition to a connected state where the mobile device is capable of exchanging user data with the network.

Claims (27)

1. A mobile wireless communication device comprising:

a memory;

a receiver configured to receive a release to inactive message instructing the mobile wireless communication device to enter an inactive state, the inactive state comprising connection to a network in a connection management connected (CM_Connected) state without a capability of transmitting or receiving user data between the mobile wireless communication device and the network;

a transmitter configured to transmit a resume request to a base station while the mobile wireless communication device is in the inactive state, the resume request requesting establishment of a connected state comprising the capability to transmit and receive user data between the mobile wireless communication device and the network;

a controller configured to log an inactive duration indicative of a duration of time from receiving the release to inactive message to the transmission of the resume request.

2. The mobile wireless communication device of claim 1 , wherein the inactive duration is logged as part of a configured Minimization of Drive Test (MDT) log.

3. The mobile wireless communication device of claim 2 , wherein the controller is further configured to log a service type identifier, the configured MDT log comprising the service type identifier.

4. The mobile wireless communication device of claim 2 , wherein the controller is further configured to log a reselected cell criteria, the configured MDT log comprising the reselected cell criteria indicative of criteria for selecting a serving cell.

5. The mobile wireless communication device of claim 4 , wherein the reselected cell criteria indicates whether the selected cell is a best cell or a non-best cell.

6. The mobile wireless communication device of claim 2 , wherein the controller is further configured to log inactive state MDT data during the inactive state and to log idle state MDT data during an idle state where the mobile device is not CM-CONNECTED and cannot exchange user data with the network, the configured MDT log comprising a state change indicator indicative of when the mobile device was in idle state and when the mobile device was in the inactive state.

7. The mobile wireless communication device of claim 6 , the receiver further configured to receive a log retrieval request from the base station, the transmitter further configured to send the configured MDT log to the base station in response to the log retrieval request.

8. The mobile wireless communication device of claim 1 , wherein the base station is a last serving base station transmitting the release to inactive message.

9. The mobile wireless communication device of claim 1 , wherein the release to inactive message is received from a last serving base station and the resume request is transmitted to a target base station.

10. The mobile wireless communication device of claim 1 , wherein the inactive state and the connected state are defined by at least one revision of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) 5G New Radio (NR) specification as RRC_INACTIVE and RRC_CONNECTED, respectively.

11. A method comprising:

receiving a release to inactive message instructing the mobile wireless communication device to enter an inactive state, the inactive state comprising connection to a network in a connection management connected (CM_Connected) state without a capability of transmitting or receiving user data between the mobile wireless communication device and the network;

transmitting a resume request to a base station while the mobile wireless communication device is in the inactive state, the resume request requesting establishment of a connected state comprising the capability to transmit and receive user data between the mobile wireless communication device and the network;

logging an inactive duration indicative of a duration of time from receiving the release to inactive message to the transmission of the resume request.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein logging the inactive duration comprises logging the inactive duration as part of a configured Minimization of Drive Test (MDT) log.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising logging a service type identifier, the configured MDT log comprising the service type identifier.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising logging a reselected cell criteria, the configured MDT log comprising the reselected cell criteria indicative of criteria for selecting a serving cell.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the reselected cell criteria indicates whether the selected cell is a best cell or a non-best cell.

16. The method of claim 12 , further comprising logging inactive state MDT data during the inactive state and logging idle state MDT data during an idle state where the mobile device is not CM-CONNECTED and cannot exchange user data with the network, the configured MDT log comprising a state change indicator indicative of when the mobile device was in idle state and when the mobile device was in the inactive state.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising receiving a log retrieval request from the base station and sending the configured MDT log to the base station in response to the log retrieval request.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the base station is a last serving base station transmitting the release to inactive message.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the release to inactive message is received from a last serving base station and the resume request is transmitted to a target base station.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein the inactive state and the connected state are defined by at least one revision of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) 5G New Radio (NR) specification as RRC_INACTIVE and RRC_CONNECTED, respectively.
