Abstract

A surgical robotic arm ( 520 ) for use with an external vision system ( 512 ) includes onboard control and at least four degrees of articulation. The robotic arm ( 520 ) can position various tools ( 534 ) in the surgical theatre responsive to positional feedback In from the vision system ( 512 ). Exemplary tools ( 534 ) include a handpiece ( 519 ) that includes a motorized bun or saw, a cutting guide ( 542 ) for a handheld saw, or a laser to actively define a resection area for a surgeon. The tool ( 534 ) or a reference point on the arm ( 520 ) relative to the tool ( 534 ) includes fiducial marks to register the position of the tool ( 534 ) with the vision system ( 512 ). Exemplary ( 534 ) are especially suited for knee and hip arthroplasty and can be moved under processor or manual control.

Claims (40)

1 . A powered robotic surgical arm for controlling a surgical tool, the powered robotic surgical arm comprising:

a first arm section;

a second arm section movably coupled to the first arm section;

an end effector coupled to the second arm section, the end effector configured to be coupled to the surgical tool at a predetermined geometry;

a sensor configured to sense a load applied to at least one of the first arm section, the second arm section, or the end effector;

an actuator configured to:

lock a movement of the second arm section relative to the first arm section such that the second arm section is rigidly held in place thereby, and

release the movement of the second arm section relative to the first arm section in response to the load being sensed by the sensor; and

a fiducial marker disposed on the end effector, the fiducial marker configured to be identified by a surgical tracking system for tracking the pose of the end effector.

2 . (canceled)

3 . The powered robotic surgical arm of claim 1 , wherein the surgical tool comprises at least one of a cut guide clamp, a retractor clamp, a saw, a burring device, an impaction tool, or a laser projection tool.

4 . The powered robotic surgical arm of claim 1 , wherein the fiducial marker is configured to be identified by an IR camera of the surgical tracking system.

5 . The powered robotic surgical arm of claim 1 , wherein the actuator comprises a servomotor.

6 . The powered robotic surgical arm of claim 1 , wherein the end effector is configured to be removably coupled to the surgical tool.

7 . The powered robotic surgical arm of claim 1 , wherein the end effector is movably coupled to the distal end of the second arm section.

8 . A surgical system for controlling and tracking a surgical tool, the surgical system comprising:

a tracking system comprising a camera;

a powered robotic surgical arm comprising:

a first arm section,

a second arm section movably coupled to the first arm section,

an end effector coupled to the second arm section, the end effector configured to be coupled to the surgical tool at a predetermined geometry,

an actuator configured to:

lock a movement of the second arm section relative to the first arm section such that the second arm section is rigidly held in place thereby, and

unlock the second arm section relative to the first arm section in response to the load being sensed by the sensor such that the second arm section can be moved relative to the first arm section, and

a fiducial marker disposed on the end effector, the fiducial marker configured to be identified by the camera; and

a control system configured to:

determine a first pose of the end effector by identifying the fiducial marker via the camera, and

determine a second pose of the surgical tool coupled to the end effector according to the first pose and the predetermined geometry between the surgical tool and the end effector.

9 . The surgical system of claim 8 , wherein the control system is further configured to control a movement of the powered robotic surgical arm according to the determined second pose of the surgical tool.

10 . (canceled)

11 . The surgical system of claim 8 , wherein the surgical tool comprises at least one of a cut guide clamp, a retractor clamp, a saw, a burring device, an impaction tool, or a laser projection tool.

12 . The surgical system of claim 8 , wherein the camera comprises an IR camera.

13 . The surgical system of claim 8 , wherein the actuator comprises a servomotor.

14 . The surgical system of claim 8 , wherein the end effector is configured to be removably coupled to the surgical tool.

15 . The surgical system of claim 8 , wherein the end effector is movably coupled to the distal end of the second arm section.

16 . The powered robotic surgical arm of claim 1 , wherein the powered robotic surgical arm comprises a passive robotic arm.

17 . The powered robotic surgical arm of claim 1 , wherein the powered robotic surgical arm comprises seven degrees of freedom.

18 . The powered robotic surgical arm of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined geometry comprises a predetermined pose of the surgical tool relative to the end effector.

19 . The surgical system of claim 8 , wherein the powered robotic surgical arm comprises a passive robotic arm.

20 . The surgical system of claim 8 , wherein the powered robotic surgical arm comprises seven degrees of freedom.
