Abstract

Aspects of this disclosure relate to detecting and recording information associated with electrical overstress (EOS) events, such as electrostatic discharge (ESD) events. For example, in one embodiment, an apparatus includes an electrical overstress protection device, a detection circuit configured to detect an occurrence of the EOS event, and a memory configured to store information indicative of the EOS event.

Claims (39)

1. A system with charge storage, the system comprising:

a plurality of storage elements configured to store charge;

an electrical overstress protection device configured to provide electrical overstress protection for the storage elements; and

a plurality of switches each arranged in series with a respective storage element of the storage elements, wherein the system is configured to wirelessly transmit an indication of the charge stored in the storage elements.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a voltage monitoring circuit configured to monitor the charge stored by the storage elements.

3. The system of claim 2 , further comprising a switch control circuit configured to turn on a selected switch of the switches based on information from the voltage monitoring circuit.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a moving part configured to generate charge from moving, wherein the storage elements are configured to store the charge generated by the moving part.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein:

the moving part comprises a first layer of a material configured to generate the charge from movement of the moving part; and

a charge harvesting system comprises the storage elements, a second layer of a material configured to enhance charge collection, and a conductive path for steering charge from the second layer to the storage elements.

6. The system of claim 4 , wherein the moving part comprises a rotating shaft.

The system of claim 1 , further comprising an electrical overstress steering device configured to provide energy associated with an electrical overstress event to one or more of the storage elements by way of one or more of the switches to thereby store charge associated with the electrical overstress event.

8. A docking station comprising the system of claim 1 , wherein the docking station is configured to charge an electric vehicle.

9. The docking station of claim 8 , wherein the docking station is configured to wirelessly receive information associated with a level of charge stored by the electric vehicle.

10. The docking station of claim 8 , wherein the docking station comprises circuitry configured to be pre-conditioned and/or enabled responsive to detecting a vehicle approaching the docking station.

11. The docking station of claim 8 , wherein the docking station comprises energy harvesting circuitry configured to steer the charge to the storage elements.

12. A vehicle comprising the system of claim 1 .

13. The vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the vehicle is configured to turn off non-essential functionality in response to detecting that charge stored by the storage elements is at a certain level.

14. The vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the vehicle is configured to initiate a plan to recharge in response to detecting that charge stored by the storage elements is at a certain level.

15. The vehicle of claim 12 , further comprising a rotating shaft, the rotating shaft comprising material to enhance charge generated by the rotating shaft and stored by the storage element.

16. The vehicle of claim 12 , further comprising a moving part, wherein the charge stored by the system is generated based on the moving part moving due to kinetic energy.

17. The vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the vehicle is an electric vehicle.

18. A method comprising:

steering current to a storage element of a bank of storage elements;

providing, by an electrical overstress protection device, electrical overstress protection to the storage element;

storing, by the storage element, charge associated with the current; and

wirelessly transmitting information associated with the amount of charge stored by the storage element.

19. A system with charge storage, the system comprising:

machinery having a moving part having a primary function, the moving part comprising a first layer of a material configured to generate charge from movement of the moving part; and

a charge harvesting system comprising:

a plurality of storage elements;

a second layer of a material configured to enhance charge collection; and

a conductive path for steering charge from the second layer to the storage elements,

wherein the moving part and the charge harvesting system are positioned sufficiently close to transfer charge from the first layer to the second layer.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the material of the first layer comprises an electroactive polymer.

21. The system of claim 20 , wherein the moving part comprises a rotating shaft.

22. The system of claim 19 , wherein the moving part and the charge harvesting system are positioned such that the first layer and the second layer contact one another to generate charge while the moving part moves.

23. The system of claim 19 , wherein the moving part and the charge harvesting system are positioned such that electrical charge can arc across a gap between the first layer and the second layer while the moving part moves.

24. The system of claim 19 , further comprising an electrical overstress protection device configured to provide electrical overstress protection for the storage elements.
