Abstract

Systems and methods are operable to notify a user of content availability. An exemplary embodiment receives a content availability notification request that specifies at least one content of interest, searches current electronic program guide (EPG) information to identify the content of interest, determines that the information identifying the specified content of interest is unavailable based upon the search of the current EPG information, generates a content availability reminder that is associated with the specified content of interest, monitors a content database to determine an availability of the specified content of interest identified in the content availability reminder, determines that the specified content of interest is available when the monitored content database indicates availability of the specified content of interest, and generates a content availability reminder notification that indicates at least a title of the specified content of interest.

Claims (76)

1. A method of notifying a user of content availability, the method comprising:

receiving, at a media device, a content availability notification request from a remote device that is communicatively coupled to the media device of the user,

wherein the content availability notification request specifies content that is of interest to the user on a restricted basis and a pre-authorization from the user for the specified content of interest;

periodically monitoring, at the media device, electronic program guide (EPG) information to determine availability of the specified content of interest based on a title of the specified content of interest;

generating, at the media device, a content availability reminder notification in response to determining during periodic monitoring that the specified content of interest is available or is scheduled for future presentation on the restricted basis, wherein the restricted basis comprises the pre-authorization from the user; and

presenting the content availability reminder notification on a display that is communicatively coupled to the media device to the user when the user is operating the media device,

wherein a presence of a notification icon on the display indicates the specified content of interest is scheduled for presentation on the restricted basis and the pre-authorization from the user.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

presenting the content availability reminder notification that indicates that the specified content of interest is available on the VOD system;

accessing, at the media device, the specified content of interest from the VOD system; and

presenting the accessed specified content of interest to the user.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein after the specified content of interest is identified in the EPG information, the method further comprising:

scheduling an event for recording, at the media device, the specified content of interest when the specified content of interest is received in a program content stream at the media device.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, at the media device, the specified content of interest identified in the content availability notification request when the media device is presenting other content to the user; and

replacing presentation of the other content with a presentation of the specified content of interest when the specified content of interest is received in a program content stream received at the media device.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

presenting the EPG information that identifies a plurality of scheduled programs to the user of the media device,

wherein information identifying the plurality of scheduled programs is based on current EPG information stored at the media device,

wherein the content availability reminder notification is presented with the EPG when the availability of the specified content of interest has been determined.

8. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computing system, cause the computing system to perform operations of notifying a user of content availability, the operations comprising:

receiving, at a media device, a content availability notification request from a remote device that is communicatively coupled to the media device of the user,

wherein the content availability notification request specifies content that is of interest to the user on a restricted basis and a pre-authorization from the user for the specified content of interest;

periodically monitoring, at the media device, electronic program guide (EPG) information to determine availability of the specified content of interest based on a title of the specified content of interest;

generating, at the media device, a content availability reminder notification in response to determining during periodic monitoring that the specified content of interest is available or is scheduled for future presentation on the restricted basis, wherein the restricted basis comprises the pre-authorization from the user; and

presenting the content availability reminder notification on a display that is communicatively coupled to the media device to the user when the user is operating the media device,

wherein a presence of a notification icon on the display indicates the specified content of interest is scheduled for presentation on the restricted basis and the pre-authorization from the user.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise:

generating at the media device a searchable content guide based on a content database; and

presenting the searchable content guide in a graphical user interface format on the display, wherein the searchable content guide is configured to receive at least one search command to interactively assist the user in identifying the specified content of interest.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the content availability notification request identifies the specified content of interest using an identifier, and wherein the operations to periodically monitor the EPG information to determine availability of the specified content of interest comprises further comprise:

monitoring, at the media device, the EPG information to determine if the specified content of interest is being scheduled for presentation based on identifiers of programs received in the EPG information.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the operations of generating the content availability reminder notification at the media device further comprise:

generating, at the media device, the content availability reminder notification in response to the specified content of interest becoming available on a Video on Demand (VOD) system;

presenting the content availability reminder notification that indicates that the specified content of interest is available on the VOD system;

accessing, at the media device, the specified content of interest from the VOD system; and

presenting the accessed specified content of interest to the user.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein after the specified content of interest is identified in the EPG information, the operations further comprise:

scheduling an event for recording, at the media device, the specified content of interest when the specified content of interest is received in a program content stream at the media device.
