Abstract

A prosthetic aortic valve includes an annular, annulus inflow portion that is designed to reside in or near the patient's native aortic valve annulus, and an annular, aortic outflow portion that is designed to reside in the patient's aorta downstream from at least a portion of the valsalva sinus. The annulus inflow portion and the aortic outflow portion are connected to one another by a plurality of connecting struts that are confined to regions near the commissures of the patient's native aortic valve. The connecting struts are designed to bulge out into the valsalva sinus to help anchor the prosthetic valve in place. The valve is circumferentially collapsible to a relatively small diameter for less-invasive delivery into the patient. The valve circumferentially expands to a larger operational diameter when deployed at the implant site.

Claims (19)

1. A prosthetic heart valve, comprising:

a stent frame having an expanded condition and a collapsed condition, the stent frame including an inflow portion, an outflow portion, and a plurality of connecting struts, each of the connecting struts having a first end connected to the inflow portion and a second end connected to the outflow portion, the inflow portion including a plurality of commissure structures spaced from one another in an annular direction around the inflow portion, each of the commissure structures having a first portion with a first end and a second portion, the commissure structure being connected only to a respective pair of points on a remaining structure of the inflow portion, the second portion of the commissure structure including a post member extending from the first portion toward the outflow portion, the post member having a free end; and

a plurality of valve leaflets supported by the inflow portion.

2. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each of the connecting struts is connected to the inflow portion only at points that are farther from the outflow portion than the free ends of the post members.

The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , wherein an edge of the inflow portion that is most remote from the outflow portion includes a recessed edge portion aligned with at least one of the commissure structures, the recessed edge portion being closer to the outflow portion than other portions of the edge of the inflow portion.

4. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the second portion of each of the commissure structures includes two post members spaced apart from one another in the annular direction.

5. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 4 , wherein each of the post members includes a plurality of apertures.

6. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the inflow portion includes a plurality of diamond-shaped cells, a group of the diamond-shaped cells being interposed between adjacent ones of the commissure structures.

The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 6 , wherein each of the diamond-shaped cells has a first end pointing toward the outflow portion and a second end pointing away from the outflow portion, the first end and the second end each having a C shape in the collapsed condition of the stent frame.

8. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 6 , wherein the outflow portion includes a plurality of diamond-shaped cells, the second end of each of the connecting struts being connected to a respective one of the diamond-shaped cells in the outflow portion.

The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 8 , wherein each of the diamond-shaped cells in the outflow portion has a first end pointing toward the inflow portion and a second end pointing away from the inflow portion, and the second end of each of the connecting struts is connected to the first end of the diamond-shaped cells in the outflow portion.

10. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the first end of each of the diamond-shaped cells in the outflow portion and the second end of each of the diamond-shaped cells in the outflow portion has a C shape in the collapsed condition of the stent frame.

11. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the inflow portion includes a single row of struts arranged in a zig-zag pattern, a group of the struts being arranged between adjacent ones of the commissure structures.

12. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the outflow portion includes a single row of struts arranged in a zig-zag pattern, the second end of each of the connecting struts being connected to a respective one of the struts in the outflow portion.

The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the zig-zag pattern includes first pairs of struts forming peaks relatively close to the inflow portion and second pairs of struts forming peaks relatively far away from the inflow portion, and the second end of each of the connecting struts is connected to the peaks relatively far from the inflow portion.

14. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each of the post members includes a plurality of apertures.

15. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising fabric outside at least a portion of the stent frame.

16. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each of the commissure structures has an associated pair of the connecting struts, the connecting struts in the pair being disposed on opposite sides of the commissure structure in the annular direction.

The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of anchor members that are resiliently biased to incline outwardly from the stent frame in the expanded condition, the anchor members being connected to the stent frame only at positions that are not between the inflow portion and the outflow portion.
